Rocksmith: kinda like Rock Band/Guitar Hero...but with a REAL guitar

Taks are great instruments......I have a Tak elec/aco bass and it slays even when unplugged, have played many of my buddies elec/aco Tak 6 stringers and they are great playing guitars.....

it's always up to what the individual gets out of his/her guitar....we can all say what we like about such and such brand but......until the person feels the instrument themselves,we are just making our comments for nothing really.

you really have to go out and check things for yourselves......price,weight,feel........and sound to "your" ear.

Thanks, Baraka_Guru, Fly, Toxic515 and Martian. You've been a big help.
I didn't realize they made amps that low of price.
I'll probably go ahead and get the Les Paul Epi bundle and let that be my starter guitar.

My brother plays the guitar, but we've mostly been on the outs for a few months, and I don't feel up to talking with him about any of this.

Anyway, we have a great little instrument shop in the next town over that I bought my trombone in as a kid.
If I get the hang of the LP, Jr., and feel I want to graduate, that'll be the place to go to get some tactile experience.

    Thanks, guys.

To be perfectly clear, you're not exactly getting a Marshall stack for that price, but yeah amps can be had on the cheap. This would be for a cheap 10w practice amp, not something you could use to perform but they're fine for messing around with.

Browsing Musician's Friend should give you an idea of what's available, though they're hardly the cheapest.

Oh, God.. just what we need. More crap electric guitar players who want to shred and play lead. Or have I got it wrong?

Anyone starting up, I'd recommend some lessons. Best to get the basics right before you develop all those bad habits (like mine!).

As far as sites are concerned, http://www.justinguitar.com/ is very good.

In terms of electro-acoustics, they are only really useful for live work. I have a Martin and a Taylor, both with onboard electronics.. but never record direct (a mic is better). They may be usable on this game - I don't know. In general, though, I'd recommend buying the guitar for how it sounds and feels .. you can always add electrics later, if needed.

As far as amps are concerned, either buy cheap and throw it away or go for a good tube amp. The amp is as important as the guitar in that setup. Caveat, I'm mostly an acoustic guy.

    Thanks, Martian.
Yeah, I have no aspirations to be the Flyman.
I just want to sit with friends and play some while they get drunk. ;)

Thanks, Alistair. I'll check it out.
And no, I'm under no illusions or delusions of grandeur. :)

If I can learn from Rocksmith one iota of what this guitarist knows, then I'll count it money well spent.

Freman, if you get that bundle and you happen to have an iPhone 4, you might also consider purchasing an iRig. I use one when I travel, and it runs the entire signal chain in my iPhone, allowing for amp modeling, distortion and with the add in 4 track recording right on my phone. I will either play through headphones, or computer speakers when I'm on the road and it's perfect for hotel room practicing. (it's about $40, and the base software is free) And the others are right, there are loads of $40 amps out there that are fine for practicing. If you're willing to pop for more like $100, you can get any number of good amps with great effects built in. There are Line 6, Fender Mustang, Vox, and several other modeling amps at that price point that are a truckload of bang for the buck. Just make sure that you get that guitar set up properly at a local music shop, or you're likely to hate it and feel like you cannot learn. I've bought tons of guitars that people thought were just awful because they were never properly intonated or adjusted. (and then flipped them for a tidy profit.)

what you can plug a guitar into an iphone? this is the first innovation they have that has gotten me intrigued. i used to take my acoustic on the road for entertainment, but the dry winters got to it and it's almost beyond repair now. electrics dont seem to have such huge intonation changes from weather compared to acoustics. being able to plug an electric into a phone is kinda cool.

Thanks for the advice and info, Toxic.
I've never heard about intonating a guitar before, just tuning one. It seems I have more to learn than I knew.

  11. Fly

    Fly music is the answer

intonation in part is the height of your strings from the fretboard and the saddles in your bridge...they all need to be set up as a unit in order for your guitar to stay in tune......if your intonation is out.....your guitar won't tune properly, then you'll get pissed off.Toxic is right.......spend 50 bucks and have it set up right off the hop.......local Guitar Center usually does it

good luck Fre........would love to see you score.

samcol: Yep, I have a Ministar 'lestar' travel guitar and an iRig that I travel with. They fly very well, and the guitar itself is under $100 on ebay all the time. The newest ones actually have a headphone amp built in. It's not the best guitar in the world, but I have no plans to use it in a studio or on stage... Unless I get a wild hair just to do something strange or to prove a point, ha ha.

Oh, and Sam, there's a Line 6 product that's different but similar in concept to the iRig. I haven't used it, but it also seems to get good reviews. Your local Guitar Center should have the iRig in stock, I don't know about the MobileIn (the Line 6 guitar processor)

For those of you who don't quite yet know how deep this game goes, have a look here. It has a full effects suite as well that you can use in "sandbox mode"!

Very tempted, spent 30 years of playing games, this could actually be one where I could pick up a useful skill. Do really like the idea of this and hope it is as good as I hope it will be.

Pretty cool feature, the Amp mode. But you have to reach a certain score in the game to unlock the mode.
I wonder how forgiving this will be to absolute beginners.

Assume this to be a progressive thing, where you unlock one tool at a time from low skill to the higher skills. It's like a carrot on a stick to keep you going along and improving your play.

well this comes out for the consoles tomorrow, but too bad i dont have one. the release date for the pc went from december something to indefinite? what the hell? i swear there's a conspiracy against pc gamers. i know their sales aren't near where the consoles are but there's a lot of great games that can only be played on pc.

plus i think the pc version of this game will truly be the best. in short time there will likely be mods and hacks of additional songs or exercises that people have created.

i'm so excited about playing this game that i'm actually thinking about buying a console :|

I have a PC, but I'm getting it for PS3.

It makes more sense for me because the PS3 setup is in the living room on the bigger TV. Plus there's more room than in my little office, where my PC is.

I've been reading more about the game. I just realized the minigames are tied into things such as scales to get your basic chops down. You basically kill zombies, play Tetris, etc., on the guitar.

They really have attempted to make learning guitar into a game.

If the hype is to be believed, I'm going to enjoy this thing.
