Mostly I taught myself... With thick books from Borders and B&N and no fear and the desire for a paycheck. (no such thing as Google back then)

The only degrees existing in IT was Computer Science or Electrical Engineering....either deep level programming or the boards themselves.
Me, I did Art then Physics...Comp Sci a couple of classes which I failed by not going to them (Frat parties instead of Fortran and Cobol)

Only complete "class" was in HS in '83...my 1st database at 15 was dBase II on a Tandy Radio Shack system with everything load in memory from real floppies (no harddrive)
To store D&D characters and a random dice roller app written in Basic

Systems Tech and Networking a bit from an old friend who was a NW engineer/consultant in SD when I was 21.

Other than under the table app creation and SysTech gigs...got started FT in IT industry when a vendor hired me to sell computers after I delivered a Domino's pizza to his office.
Broke all the sales records, quit...started my own biz in training and systems/NW setup...and did short-term contract work in ANYTHING thru RHI
Never said No, I don't know it...just said, Sure, what do ya need...taught myself on the fly.

    School & Google...what's that??

    Oh yeah, no certifications...not one.
    Just experience.

Just started a degrees in IT mgmt, cybersecuruty and goal of a Masters in Data Science
Can teach the friggin' classes...but I just need a nice piece of paper that says I know what I'm doing.
If I do...they'll pay me more. So I'll do it. Hate the shit...got better thing to spend my money on.

I did an optional computer class in junior high (must've been like 1986 or '87 at the latest). We were all working on Apple IIc and Apple IIe (I don't think the school owned more than 1 Macintosh), and learned some simple programs in BASIC.

But nobody in those days had mandatory computer science as part of their school curricula.

I did have a CS requirement in college. I took a class where they taught us the basic suite of what I'm not sure was yet called Microsoft Office applications. Stood me in good stead when I started working.

There were computer courses that some of my friends took. They had punch cards and made programs or some such thing.

I wasn't smart enough for that kind thing.

Instead, I was using the computer lab to type my essays and format cool newspapers in columns. Our library had four computers and our English department had three (they were early Apple IIe or c and one Mac). Nobody was using them, so I made heavy use of them to start working on my English and French essays and my assignments for MassCommunications.
