    I go with "it's the thought that counts."

    But.................receiving something that is clearly a case of re-gifting sucks. Sort of acceptable from someone you barely know, such as a you-must-participate office gift exchange, but not from someone you know and they know you.

    For example, I once received a martini pitcher & glasses set, which would've been OK except the pattern was large colored dots painted on clear glass (fugly!!), and I knew that my co-worker the gifter did not buy it (even she seemed embarrassed by giving to me). I think that the set ended up going with my wife to an intentional re-gifting/ugly/gag gift party.

    On the flip side, one of our temps who was having very serious money problems bought me a dollar store item. It's a large coffee mug with a Far Side cartoon on it, a factory second with some obvious paint flaws. I loved it, still love it, & still use it as my main coffee mug.

    I especially like this.:) And it somewhat reminds me of this in the spirit of gift giving.
