Sounds like a cool place to hang out.

I forgot another one of my favorites-- one of the local places serves Bottlecaps: beer battered, fried jalapeno slices. SO GOOD.

  2. Martins West in Redwood City CA is a gastro pub that serves up some of the norms and also Haggis Stick - basically traditional haggis filling breaded and fried like a corndog. Try it (or 2) with a pint. It is amazing. Their sheperds pie is also the best Ive ever had.

Tavern has kind of an old school sound to it. In small towns especially, a tavern can be a very family type place, complete with young kids and the dogs that strange was talking about. Sometimes the only food service within miles. Quite rowdy sometimes, after the Friday night local (high school) football game.
In my home town there was a little place right across the highway from a small factory that made farm implement parts. They offered a "cheese plate" with crackers, little tiny gherkin pickles, and slices of cheese. A "meat plate" with sliced salami, pepperoni, summer sausage, crackers, and mustard. A "sardine plate" with canned sardines, pickles, crackers, and mustard. And great chili, that always ran out by late afternoon. My dad used to take me there when I was a little girl. It closed down when I was in high school about twenty years ago. The old bachelor owner had Alzheimers, and it finally got so bad that he couldn't run the place anymore.
Small town "joints" were great social centers. Now all of them are trying to imitate "sports bars" with a whole bunch of blaring oversize TVs playing live and canned sports. Sad. The great small town atmosphere completely lost.

It seems as if everything is deep fried in Wisconsin, so I try to stay away. I do love fried cheese curds though

i'm surprised no one has mentioned an american staple for these places... buffalo wings. they go great with beer and sports and some places here in l.a. are famous for them.

my favorite time to go eat at a place like whats being discussed is happy hour. i get really full just from an appetizer or 2 and i love how small the tab is when i cash out. my favorite by me is the enterprise fish co.'s seafood happy hour. you can get fresh popcorn shrimp or calimari or ahi poke all for 5 or 6 bucks.
