I had my first margarita tonight after the grill-out, while watching the fireworks. I asked 'em to go easy on the tequila.
It was ok. Not my drink, it seems.

It's the hottest day of the year, or supposed to be, and my A/C went out last night. And I'm one of those people who keeps my house cold all year round, 63-64* in the winter and 68-69* in the summer. On the positive side the repair guy said he thought they could make it out around noon, and by my description it should be a simple fix. I hope he is right, and I hope he's able to hurry!

Both my father and eldest brother are furnacemen, which pretty much means they're ACmen in the summers. You wouldn't believe the joy they bring people when they show up around noon on a hot day to repair an AC unit on the fritz. They're like goddamn rockstars.

    Cooked lunches make great tips.

I have meetings for work all morning and will basically be meeting him at the house. He's calling an hour before coming by. So I don't know about lunch, but I could probably send him away with a six pack of good beer.

  12. I haven't written a big news story in nearly 10 years. I've been mostly writing PR stuff. I interviewed my subject, did research, wrote the article and just submitted it to the editor of my campus's research magazine.

Feels good. I can't wait to see it all marked up with red red RED!

What is the tip on "your unit was undersized and had to work twice as hard as it should've so it's a complete lost cause, I need $2600 to keep your house from being 90* inside by tonight?" :(

    Wow. That sucks.

It sounds like you need more BTUs, bra.

Did the same company install the current AC unit?

At least you don't have to replace your furnace, which would be far worse.

He said the ductwork in my house was set up for a 17" wide furnace and the builder (I moved in when the house was 6 years old, it's about 11 years old now) chose to install a 14" wide unit, probably to cut cost. This meant a 2-ton A/C working overtime to cool the place instead of the at least 3-ton A/C that should be used, because the smaller furnace couldn't push enough air to support a 3-ton. So unless I want to replace my furnace immediately as well (I don't), I'm stuck replacing it with another 2-ton unit, albeit more efficient. 10yr warranty on parts, 5yr on labor.

I'd shop it out a little more, except today is the hottest day of the year so far (heat index may reach 115-120), tomorrow is supposed to be almost as bad, and we're in the peak heat of the year in July/August. He can get this unit installed within a couple hours. If I got estimates and scheduled another appointment I'd probably be a week or more without air during the hottest week of the year. It's already in the mid-80s in the house and so I'd end up spending the money I'd save on a couple window units in the meantime anyway. Bleh, the joys of home ownership.

  16. "unit is too small"....
Nah, I'll leave that one for one of our other smart asses.:D

    A) The rain came back. They still held the fireworks show, but they did it without me.

    2) Been promising QW an Aerosmith concert for YEARS. Making good on that tonight!
BONUS: Cheap Trick opening the show! Going to be a great night!

I was waiting for that one..............but at least it works twice as hard!!

He's saying he'll be done within an hour or so. It's at 85* and holding in the house. I'm not sure what is more annoying, the heat or the money. Right now probably the heat. In a few weeks, the money.

  18. I finished painting the trim on the house this afternoon. Started yesterday morning at 7:30, not quite as early this morning. Yesterday I quit at noon, today I put a second coat on the garage door after lunch. Considering the heat, I feel remarkably well. Lots of Gatorade, makes a huge difference.

I think I may have sweat all the toxins out of my body. Time to start replacing them. :D
