  1. Most of my relatives fall into this category. Even worse, they are literalist Catholics! I strongly suspect that a few of them would bring back the Inquisition, if they could.

Not to defend the Inquisition or anything, but there was a dearth of scientific knowledge back then.

Today? To be a creationist, you have to "disagree with" (or ignore or disbelieve, or whatever it is) scientific fact. If you were logically consistent, you would also possibly believe the earth is flat. (There is "evidence" of this in the Bible, and a spherical earth is a scientific fact.)

It's faith that flies in the face of reality. For all the capital-t "Truth" that this sort of Christian espouses, it's amazing how much real-world truth they need to ignore/oppose/whatever.

For the record, this is the Tyson quote I was contemplating posting: "Some claim that evolution is just a theory, as if it were merely an opinion. The theory of evolution — like the theory of gravity — is a scientific fact. Evolution really happened. Accepting our kinship with all life on Earth is not only solid science. In my view, it’s also a soaring spiritual experience."

I think it was the second episode of Cosmos. I can't confirm it, as I've only watched the first episode (so far!).

I'm helping run a Twitter contest over the next few days. I'm trying really hard not to watch it incessantly. I have other work to do.

It was a perfect early fall Chicago-area day. Most of them are.
Sadly, early fall only lasts two weeks.

    Today: calculus.

I am a woman of many talents. Actually teaching kids calculus is not one of them. Watching kids teach themselves calculus? I can do that.

You are, indeed, a woman of many talents, dear @snowy. Calculus need not be among them. Calculus was invented by Sir Isaac Newton as a means of torturing criminals. It was only a century later that the educational system got hold of it.

I know whereof I speak. As a chemistry major in college, I was subjected to almost unimaginable mathematical tortures: calculus, differential equations, vector mathematics.....

I've seen things, @snowy...dark, terrible things.....

    :D

Oh yeah? Maybe you can pass along some useful tips. I'm still not sure how this adulthood things is supposed to work. I keep thinking that I have the batteries upside down...

And now we have Justin Bieber albums to torture criminals....which is arguably worse by far. I still think Walmart plays the worst possible Christmas music over the loudspeaker (technically the fire alarm system, but whatever) to reduce the overnight crew through suicide.

I say that last bit having enjoyed 3 lovely years on overnights which included 3 holiday seasons.

Still no word from the universitay. They either got my hours and I graduated yesterday, or something is funky. Either way, I start my post-doc tomorrow.
I shall meet with a suicidal former client, who I happen to adore, then go out to a spectacular dinner with friends. And the hubs.
It's still uncomfortable to wear pants. Being home is awesome. Vodka might be awesome, too.

Thom Yorke has a new album, which pretty much means I have a new album.
