    I'm not outraged, but deeply concerned about the instability over there. My daughter is scheduled to spend 16 months in Thailand beginning in September. Am I selfish to worry more for her safety than the welfare of the Thai people? Perhaps.

    What I am seeing, and what I am hearing from Thai colleagues is that this step was necessary.

    I have been in BKK a few times during this latest crisis and life goes on. The only trouble spots were the protest zones which were all clearly marked.

    Outside of BKK things are pretty normal. If your daughter is going, have her stay out of the city if there is any concern.

    That said, I wouldn't worry.

    What Charlatan said. Thai politics is a messy one, and the military there does actually function as a peacekeeping and political resolution force.

    With the military on the street, the violence stops almost completely. If anything, your daughter is safer in Bangkok with the military in charge.

    Outside of Bangkok, most people don't care much. If the King approves, most moves are good with the population.

    In any case, I hope your daughter stays safe during her trip. :)

    Man, I thought moms back home were old. A couple just walked in to the pub we're at in Portland, and they look not much younger than my inlaws, but they have a 4-year-old. Weird.

    These people were a little too hipster, suggesting the leading edge of Gen X. Pretty sure it wasn't their grandkid, as that kind of oh-shit-I'm-42-and-want-kids thing is not uncommon here, but this had more of a 45 look to it.

    Just found a box of glazed donuts again with two mostly fresh ones left, woo hoo!
    </easily amused and no doubt tired at this point>

    18+ hours awake, 2 hours sleep, 16+ hours hours awake is a healthy sleep pattern, right? Will just stick with "normal" then for the operative term with not much more sleep all too frequently.
