My poutine tweet got picked up by the local tourism office. I have also been added to some Top Foodies on Twitter list. I feel accomplished.

    Congrats!
Twitter fame, which I've had a bit of the past 3 months, is quite a buzz.
Consistent, original Tweeting is crucial, as is retweeting and favouriting. And always #FF. This was stuff I was not doing before but am now. As snobby as this sounds, I block junk followers/hyper- tweeters peddling their wares. Since I write about TV, the exception is during a crucial time for the show, in this case, making sure it was renewed. It was. So long story short, yep, as you described, it is about building mutually beneficial relationships.

I pretty much stick to tweeting original content and re tweeting a handful of things related to beer/wine/food/sports in the PacNW (sports and beer go together after all). Consistent tweeting is sometimes hard as my focus requires me to go to a restaurant or have a beer or whatever. It amuses me because lately I've been slacking off!

I've never accessed Twitter. I've never seen an actual Tweet on someone elses device (I don't count the tweets copied and repeated in the media, those are nearly unavoidable). I can understand social media as a convenient information source, such as following your favorite bands, but not as a form of social acceptance and status.

Yeah, that part is weird to me.

My students talk about Twitter in class with each other, thinking I don't understand what they're saying (though I really hope they know better, as I'm more technologically "with it" than most of them), or that I'm not interested. They use Twitter as a means to find out what's going in the community at large. Via these convos, I've discovered which students Tweet regularly, and who to look up from time to time if I'm concerned about something.

I doubt our administration has a clue.

I must add: Social media came along when I was well past the age of being (overly) concerned about peer pressure, acceptance, etc.

Portlandia and Grimm makes me want to visit Portland Oregon so I just might have to take a short summer vacation to the area.

This is completely acceptable as long as you don't work in the entertainment industry.:)
My spouse never uses his Facebook and has never Tweeted--only reTweeted my stuff. I told him last week he could stop because I now have enough folks doing that for me. But he was a darling to have bothered to do so for about 3-4 years of my non-progress on the platform.
Social status--no--exposure and connections for business--yes.
And though recent (so-called) news reports have Twitter new user growth flattening out, the company is actually making more money than ever via sponsorship (sponsored Tweets). Unlike Facebook, they are not selling my private info, either.

Same here. My actual career was as a therapist in which case I see no need for social media other than fun. My life after heart failure is very different but it had to include striving for something. I fell into advert writing, then since I was blogging anyway, fell more into writing about pop culture/TV/films. I also copped the name of the Ontario lake upon which our family compound is located for a blog because one day I will rent out the cottage to to friends of friends for very cheap--just like my grandparents did--just enough to keep it up and pay taxes. So ...time for my walk. Just a long-winded explanation for usually having a good reason for putting energy into work--an end game. :)

    Thank you for the explanation.

Clearly I didn't understand the usefullness and power of Tweeter as a business tool.

Ralphie, I don't know, and most likely never will know. Perhaps she'll simply tell you, but don't count on it. A game of 20 questions might get you an answer.

How is it the problems we're having with the water in the house will kill any chance of us making love?
