Estrangement from eldest son appears to be thawing. (Got a belated Christmas package and a handwritten note longer than anything he's written to me in years.) This is a weird feeling. I have no idea what to do.

People in my area of the Northeast rarely ever get a solid winter forecast, which is why they tend to freak out. A projected 6 inch snow total can quickly balloon to much more with just a slight shift in a storm track. Nothing like clearing your driveway in the wake of a classic Nor'easter. Anywhere from 6-24 inches of snow can be dropped. Then there's those lovely 30-40 mph winds, with wind chills to match. Trust me, it sucks. It's even more fun when you get into a storm pattern, where you get them on a regular basis. Then you start running out of places to put the stuff....a real treat. Luckily, my area doesn't average too much, so most winters aren't awful. I understand that winters near the Great Lakes can be a treat.

Every region of this country has their own nasty weather to contend with. As much as I hate clearing snow, I'd prefer it to the ice storms they get south of here. And my relatives in Minnesota don't blink at counting snow totals in feet. And I'll pass on tornadoes in the midsection.

Hoping that everyone in the Midwest and Northern regions are staying safe and warm.

Oodles of snow here in Chicago, but the temperature is only down to 15 atm , still snowing and about 14 inches on the ground (from the past couple days) already.
But we're ready for it. bring it on.

  6. A friend north and west of us is claiming 12+ inches for the storm so far. We're only at about 3+, but the heavier snowfall is just now rolling in. Temps are holding in the high 20s (f) with the big chill expected after midnight. The morning commute should be interesting.

I'm guessing somewhere near a foot of new snow here, plus several inches that were already on the ground.

The main issue is that the wind started whipping up within the past hour and is only supposed to get worse. Fortunately my wife's office is closed tomorrow and I work from home. We shouldn't have to go out until Tuesday, though it isn't supposed to be much better Tuesday AM.

I can relate from a past job. The first time they closed the place in my 20 years, it was because the governor of the state declared a state of emergency and closed all of the highways. Very generous of them...

We're getting a strange little reprieve today. Temps climbed up to 50 overnight last night. They'll drop down into single digits overnight tonight

The warmth from the Gulf of Mexico usually protects the south side of Houston from frezzing temps. We dipped into the high 20s last night, and might get down to mid 20s tonight.

You folks 'up north' would get a laugh listening to the local news reports about our "freeze."

Mid 20s would be awesome right now. :D

Depending on who you believe, the wind chill right now is -42*F to -51*F. That's with clear skies and the sun shining. :p
