Hubby has his Master's defense this morning.

I still need to frost 48 mini cupcakes.

  7. This week is going to be sooooooo long. I'm adding 3 days to my 2 holiday days off next week to make a week long vacation. DaddySquirrel and i are going to the coast, probably the "Big City" AND we're going to get BabySquirrel's nursery together. It should be a great week.

Oh yeah, and Jesus's birth is in there somewhere.

I finally got replacement batteries for my bluetooth mouse. I don't have to use my taped-up corded mouse with the broken scroll wheel anymore.

Not having scroll on a mouse sucks. Having a touch scroll is pretty sweet.

Well, it's been an interesting morning. The defense was interesting. One highlight was that one of the committee members is the hottest engineering professor on the planet. All the ladies love him--and he's a good family man, which makes us all love him all the more. I spent an unreasonable amount of time checking him out today. It's not my fault, I swear.

I would make a terrible soccer player.

  12. Meh..me too, but I still like playing. Had to quit at 13 weeks for the baby, but plan on playing again.

The indoor complex where I play has a little soccer camp for kids that are 18 months old. I'll probably sign up BabySquirrel because they work on a lot of fine motor skills with the kids and she'll get to socialize with kids her age. (Not that she won't in Daycare, but it's still nice.) I'll probably wait until she's a wee bit older though.

I say get her involved as early as possible. Learning to kick ass early is a valuable 21st century skill. She can take it.

Sitting here watching a football game and a soccer game side by side.

Football is bullshit. I knew this before. It's just been confirmed.

    Jesus, what are the odds?

Some dude with the same last name as mine ordered something similar from the same website literally right after I did and I got his order/receipt in my box. I'm going to mail his stuff out to him because I'm Not A Dick, but it's still pretty funny.

    Odds?

That depends. Is your last name Jones or Ovacharski?

Was the site Amazon.com or the official Wilson Phillips fan club store?

  20. Street Pattern

    Street Pattern Very Tilted

Okay, let's assume his name is Smith.

No, let's not, because someone named Smith would never say "Jesus, what are the odds?" in this kind of situation.

So let's say he has the #2 surname: Johnson.

There are about 2.0 million people named Johnson in the U.S., out of a population of about 317 million.

That means, one out of every 159 people has the same surname as Mr. Plan 9 Johnson.

Now, let's make the entirely unwarranted assumption that people who order from the web site in question are a random sample of the U.S. population. Therefore, one out of every 159 orders would come from someone named Johnson.

Another unwarranted assumption: the site in question is Amazon.com. Probably he would have mentioned it by name if it were Amazon, but I'm going to go with that.

Amazon had revenue of $60 billion last year. Apparently their business is increasing, so let's say this year the total is $70 billion. Let's say ALL of that revenue came from online orders. If the average order is $50 worth of stuff, that means they get 1.4 billion orders per year. That works out to 44 orders per second.

Probably it's higher during business hours, lower at night, but let's assume that this took place in a time of day that was close to that average.

Next, we have to interpret the words "literally right after I did".

Let's say that means, within 10 seconds of Plan 9 Johnson's order.

In 10 seconds, Amazon would get about 440 orders. If one out of every 159 orders comes from a Johnson, you'd expect to see more than two Johnson orders in any 10 second period.

On the other hand, he could have meant an order that came in next after his, that is, before any other non-Johnson orders arrived.

So instead of looking at 440 orders, we're only looking at the very next order after Plan9's. And the chance of that being another Johnson would be, given the assumptions above, about one out of 159.
