My favorite teacher ever just made me tear up. We're FB friends, and she's subbing at our old high school today. Her status: "I miss you in class. All of you."

I miss her too. She's one of the reasons I became a teacher. If I can grow into even half of the teacher she is, I'll be proud of myself. She's simply amazing.

I just had a mattress delivered.

I swear to God it was delivered by Hodor.

    He really liked the puppy.

So this conversation went down in class tonight. It was during a lecture on Alzheimer's and the professor was talking about a book that had been written about the nuns in this convent most of whom had somehow defied the odds and lived into their late 80s and 90s without losing cognitive ability and the professor says (and I paraphrase, naturally):

P: Why do you suppose they were able to avoid dementia?
Another student: They kept cognitively active?
P: yes, that's right, what else?
Me: they live under less stressful circumstances
P: yes, that's a very good point and why do you think that had an influence?
Me: because stress might exacerbate the inflammation caused by the beta amyloid protein in the brain?
P: yes, you're on the right track
Another student: do you think it might be because they had spiritual faith?
P: well, spiritual faith also relieves stress so, yes, it could contribute
Another student: but the fact that they had faith because they prayed they wouldn't get it? That wouldn't have an effect?
P: Well, some of them did get it.
    Silence.

I would say that I enjoy the company of 90% of the people in my class. And it's a big class. But that 10% is getting really annoying lately.
I think because I'm just ready to be done with it. Have I said that lately?

I really don't know. I didn't know that was her last name.

  13. Unfortunately, today was the niece's day off, so no up close and personal access to the elephants. We did, however, have passes for the Serengeti tour. We got to pet and feed a giraffe, which was pretty cool. Playing with kangaroos is kinda neat, as well.

During a nap today, I had a dream about being arrested for casually driving across empty parking spaces (instead of in the aisle of the parking lot).

I was incredulous about being arrested for such a small thing, but apparently I was in very serious trouble.

The police jeered at me, saying something like, "So you think the rules don't apply to you, just because you're Energy Secretary?" (That is, Secretary of Energy among the U.S. president's cabinet ministers.)

Even in the dream, I knew I wasn't the Energy Secretary, but I wasn't sure if I should speak up and correct them.

On the one hand, if they found out I wasn't, they might lose interest in me. On the other hand, my arrest would look really ridiculous (and perhaps be thrown out later) if the record was littered with weird references to me being a cabinet secretary.

It was a relief to wake up and find myself not in trouble.

Thinking about it afterward, I remembered that (more than four decades ago) I attended high school with a future U.S. Secretary of Energy.

But he was three grades ahead of me, and I don't think we ever had any interaction.

Our foster dog got bitten by a snake in Kentucky before being brought up to IL. For a long time they didn't realize it was a bite because they thought he'd been skunked.

Long story short.. about 8 weeks into a 12 week venom elimination/recovery, and he still stinks. Now they think it messed up the body pH due to the lowered immune system. A couple packs of douche is waaaay cheaper than any medicated dip or bath.

I should not read theory/prediction threads while my husband is writing his thesis. I end up busting up and having to control myself. People have the weirdest ideas about what should happen next in Naruto.
