Pointless Announcements

Yeah, I've been around. Blending in when visiting the non-West involves wearing long sleeves/pants, speaking quietly at close proximity, constant obsequiousness and enduring long conversations about the most mundane topics. It's way chill.

One of my favorite moments from the last decade was when I parked my fire team and an armored vehicle in an Afghani guy's front yard during a patrol. He came out with tea because we were "his honored guests." War or not, good manners.

 

The military probably prepared me better to live abroad more then anything else. Granted my military experience and yours are on completely different planets but still the whole "hurry up and wait" and "this is how it is so just fucking deal with it" life style experience helps a lot. I did a quick study at a party a couple years back and in surveying the crowd I came up with about 70% military experience in those who've succeeded in living here.

Sole thought, if yo do move to Thailand do not expect Thailand to change for you. Seriously the number of folks who move here, disagree with something then think they'll simply explain why Mexico is doing _________ wrong and things will change is rather astonishing.

I had a nameplate looking thing on my desk the last six months or so I was in the Navy, prior to that I didn't have a desk, just equipment to snake out shitters. If you didn't look close you thought it was my name, rank etc... If your read it it said "Just another shitty day in paradise."

 

My mantra: It's not wrong, it's just different.

It helps me make it through some really trying moments.

Have two more 12-step program meetings to attend. Then, yes, I have to write a goddamned paper on them due Monday at clinical. pfft.
Going to an AA meeting at noon. As is typical of me, I will probably stop and get a beer on the way home. Tasteless and insensitive, I know.

Dinner at my sister's tonight. Tacos. Beer. Bitching. Yay!

I had to go one time during a training week. They had about five or six of us attend a meeting. The members were not pleased and made it known. As one middle aged lady put it- 'we're not gawd damn zoo animals or freaks for you all come fucking study! That's all I gots to say today." I understood her/their point. Kind of made the whole exercise rather useless in my mind.

 

Concert tonight. Very pleased. Need live music.

 

Been a long time. I'd like to give this a try. our, least my, training was not very formal. Our training officer was a "cowboy, John Wayne" type who knew everything and yet oddly also nothing at all.

 

I've been to another AA meeting and an NA meeting within the last couple of weeks and didn't get that kind of response from either of them. Folks were really nice to me as a matter of fact.

I love saying this, because it's true: It's different for nurses.

 

It also helps when you go by yourself or just one or two other people. A group unbalances between visitors and members. Disrupts the group process at times.

 

Yes. And as a matter of fact we were told explicitly not to go in groups larger than 2.
