Penn State Child Molestation Scandal

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by Borla, Nov 8, 2011.

  1. The Paterno family's statement on the NCAA penalties...

    They don't get it.

OMG! That's odd that the people investigating Paterno for covering up for a child molester didn't get input from his family about how to soften their findings. Isn't that pretty commonplace? Since when do we let our public officials publish the results of an investigation into wrongdoing without first letting the wrongdoer's family's lawyers sign off on it?

Plus, fuck the survivors. Won't someone think of Paterno's legacy? Who cares about living people who've experienced real, tragic pain, we've got sugar-coated memories to preserve! Have these people thought about the fact that if we damage Paterno's legacy, it will essentially be like he covered up for that child molester for nothing? No. They haven't. Because they've selfishly put "justice" and "doing the right thing" ahead of more important things like misplaced pride and willful-ignorance-of-child-rape-for-the-greater-good-of-college-football (yes, I hypened that whole fucking thing instead of rewriting the sentence in a more coherent way - I have my priorities straight, unlike that asshole Louis Freeh).

You have to realize the mentality of these people. Football is Penn State. Football is Joe Paterno. Joe Paterno is Penn State. In the minds of many the words are interchangeable. How many people do you know that get a statue while they're still living? The net result is that it's all about Joe. He was regarded as infallible by a large part of the football community, not just his family. If anyone has anything bad to say about him it has to be a lie, be it deliberate or incidental (i.e. a result of incomplete evidence). No matter what anyone has to say they will never ever admit that he did anything wrong. So long as people are pointing out that he did do something wrong they have to make these kinds of desperate, bleating noises.

The brutal irony is that the more loudly they defend their hero, the more they prove to everyone else that the 'football culture' at Penn State has gotten out of hand and something needs to be done about it.

    Who cares, really?
I heard that after Paterno's defenders get his name cleared, their next goal is to erect a statue of Colorado shooter James Holmes.

They've already enacted many changes since the Freeh Report to be compliant. My guess is that this is a 'we are serious' shot across their bow, but nothing will come of it because PSU is making huge strides to fix the admin side of what was broken.

from the article linked above, this is the main paragraph that differentiates what is happening from delerium:

i am agnostic about this particular matter. but i do find it deeply problematic that penn state has been turned into a new version of the "bad apple" the purging of which implies that the rest of the big-time sports world is somehow ok. as if the routine concealment of rapes of women are ok, for example. because, you know, these players are important for revenue. to be clear, i have no problem with how penn state's football program has been treated here---i would hav e advocated going further and vaporizing it had i been in a position of power---only the ways in which the opportunity to address systemic problems (i know the concealing of rape by sporty programs at several universities) has been dodged.

Book describes Paterno's reaction to firing - Yahoo! Sports

Maybe if he'd cried over little boys being raped next door to his office with his knowledge he wouldn't have had to cry over getting fired.

    And beautifully put, Borla.

I see Joe's emotion had interfered with his judgement:
"My name," he told Jay, "I have spent my whole life trying to make that name mean something. And now it's gone."
Well, it does mean something: Rape-Enabler.

    More charges coming?

'Highly Incriminating' Evidence in Jerry Sandusky Case Could Lead to New Charges - Yahoo!

I wonder if they'll bother with another trial. I'm imagining once he's sentenced for the charges he's already been found guilty of he'll be guaranteed to die in prison. I guess my question would be 'what do the victims want'? Do they want to have to go through a trial and testify? Will it give them some sort of closure, or help them in the healing process? Also, the article makes it sound like there are new/more details tying back to PSU in these cases. Is there something there worth revealing and getting proven in court?

I'd say if the victims really want it, do it. They deserve a say. If they don't want/need it, and he gets sentenced to enough prison time to make sure that even if he lives to 105 he'll die in prison, then don't bother.

Borla, the scuttlebutt is that these charges are going to be filed against non-Sandusky's. There's a persistent rumor that's been out there for months that there are boosters that were involved with Sandusky and that child porn was involved as well. Those rumors faded for a while, but they've come back strong in the last couple of weeks.

I literally just read that five minutes ago from another source and was coming here to post that.

If true, I wonder who else we'll find was involved. The whole thing is sickening.
