Damn it, the Patriots played a hell of a game. I almost missed the game, didn't realize it was a night game. My wife wasn't happy about watching it, but she was a trooper.

I know that the refs have been lenient about contact in the secondary (previously mentioned here), but I saw a couple of obvious take-downs yesterday that didn't draw a flag.

And what's with DBs taking picks/possible picks away from their teamates?

    They looked really impressive yesterday.

The bad news: Either the Broncos or the Patriots will be going to the SB.
The good news: Either the Broncos or the Patriots won't be going to the SB.

It would've been nice if the Chargers had played all four quarters.

I can see the Pats beating the Broncos. It won't matter if the Seahawks or (most likely) the 49ers win because the Patriots are on a roll at just the right time, momentum is everything. No science or in depth analysis was involved these predictions.

I heard Cris Carter on ESPN say that the monkey on Peyton's back has now become a Silverback Gorilla. Next week should be interesting.

  9. I have a feeling it's going to be a Patriots vs 49ers Super Bowl. Worst. Super. Bowl. EVER! I hate those teams. If that happens, I hope the stadium implodes.

Disclaimer: If the stadium DOES implode, I didn't do it. I will have a tiny baby by then and thus couldn't pull that off. Also, I have no money to pay for someone else to do it.

I'd kinda like to see the Seahawks make, only because I've been impressed with their defense. Incredibly aggressive. However, the 49ers have a strong defense too.

I was a little shocked Wisenhunt didn't take it.

Me too. But I'm just playing the waiting game. See how this pans out.

I'm not a huge Caldwell fan, but we'll see. I actually thought the Lions would add someone big. They seemed to be the most talented/complete team looking for a coach.

I agree. We have insane raw talent, in my opinion, we just need someone to reign it in and keep it controlled. Oh well. Maybe we just need a change of scenery.

  16. Whisenhunt coached at Vanderbilt. Maybe he feels a Tennessee connection. Detroit sports talkers are raising all kinds of hell over the Caldwell hiring. I think they are overlooking the fact that his bad year at Indy was the year Manning sat out after neck surgery. Other than that, he had a good record: 24-8. He was also the OC for the Ravens' Super Bowl run.

I don't think he is horrible. And I think he is leaps and bounds ahead of Schwartz as a person.

I just expected them to make more of a splash. Maybe finally lure one of the big broadcaster ex-coaches back, or get a big name college guy to jump.

So far I've been underwhelmed with all of the new hires actually. That's the cold reality of the other side of the "fire the coach" coin. There just aren't that many guys around that are wired to be successful at it.

A pox upon your house for speaking ill of my 9ers. I may have to stop wishing the cowgirls jet crashes into their fan club and start hoping it takes out the Bengals swap meet/training camp.

That said I think we're looking at a Denver Seattle SB with Denver rolling the Hawks from start to finish. I hope I'm wrong but fear I'm not.

I watched the first half of the Seachickens game at work on Sunday and it actually held my interest. Even more impressively, I watched part of the third quarter at home for nearly five minutes before losing all interest in the game.
That has to be a personal record for me voluntarily watching an NFL game, I cannot count the Superbowl in 96? when the packers played some other team and beat them by who knows how much. I was part of the firewatch detail for the contractors on the ship (whoever thought they would actually work when that game was playing was crazy) and would have chosen nearly anything else. The halftime show with the Beach Boys was incredible though.

  20. a) Coaching hires, in all sports, tends to mainly be a recycling process with very few "big splash" hires like a Pete Carroll or Jim Harbaugh.
    2) The Lions said they were looking for NFL coaching experience, with strong offensive background. They were locked in on either Whisenhunt or Caldwell from the start. Everything else was shadow play.
iii) Whisenhunt is a 3-4 defense guy and the Lions strength is their defensive tackle tandem of Suh and Fairley. Bad match.
    D) Those ex-coach broadcasters are comfy in their jackets and ties. Gruden is about the only one I could see jumping back in any time soon, and that's debatable.

Then, there is this from Tony Dungy:
Tony Dungy: "Matthew Stafford will blossom under Jim Caldwell"
