I read this Sat and meant to respond with a thought/explanation for why some QBs have great stats overall but it doesn't translate to championships, or even red zone production.

Remember what the Oilers' offense was like back then? Run and shoot, right? They'd often have 4 WRs (instead of the typical 2 or 3 back then) and the 4 WRs would have freedom to adjust their routes based on the coverage. Lots of deep routes, lots of spreading the field, etc. Moon was excellent at running that offense and they put up some pretty good raw numbers.

While running this offense on most of the field, you are actively presenting the threat of 1-2 guys doing a fly route. So the CBs generally play a few yards off the line, preferring to give up a short pass instead of getting burned downfield. Because there are often 4 WRs, the safety or safeties (depending on if the D goes in dime coverage, nickel, or uses a LB to cover a WR) have to either play very deep, or give up on a portion of the field and depend on the CB(s) over there to be successful in one-on-one coverage.

Here (IMO) is the flaw that is possible in that offense, unless you have other strengths, like a power run game. Once you get in the red zone, you shrink the depth of the field enough to give the defense help. If you are at the 50yrd line, the safety has to account for 60 yards of coverage. He has to stay behind the deepest guy (which could be 40-50 yards) or risk being burned. If you are at the 15yrd line, the back of the end zone becomes essentially a defense of its own. The corners can play up in bump and run coverage, taking away short passes and yards after catch. You can use linebackers more in coverage because they won't have to stay with a route as long. The safety doesn't have to be as deep. So instead of having 11 defenders strewn out over a 53 1/3 yard x 50+ yard wide area, you have 11 defenders in an area half that size, or less. So the same routes don't work, because the coverage can be tighter.

So offenses that look good on paper because of a wide open scheme, or because of a QB with a big arm, or with WRs that stretch the field, loses efficiency the closer you get to the end zone.

That was the Oilers run-n-shoot offense under Moon and Pardee. Lots of great passing stats--Moon could seriously shred defenses in the open field--but not the RZ. That helped the Oilers FG kickers put up some impressive numbers.

As I try to explain to my wife, "Yeah, FGs help, but that's three points instead of six, seven, or even eight points. Think of it this way, nine FG points could've been 18 points, probably 21 points, possibly even 24 points. Those 'lost' points can mean a lot in a close loss."

The lowly 49ers. I didn't see the game, haven't read a summary; what happened ?

On paper, the Broncos should've stomped the Colts. The Texans could've used the help. (Hah, Chris, hah! Like it will matter come PO time).

Well my Georgian friend I also picked the Falcons. I had high hopes, dashed again. it seems as though they can't decide between being a Pro team or a HS team just omit college all together, so disappointed :(

The Bengals should reach 9-0. It's possible that they'll take the Texans lightly and allow a close game. Most likely they're out to prove that their undefeated records isn't a fluke, and they're playing at home.

I need to read up on what's happening with DraftKings and FanDuel.

Thank you, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for giving the ass-sucking dallas cowgirls their seventh straight loss. I wonder if Dez Bryant is going to direct a tantrum at himself?

The Eagles again disappointed, but at least the Redskins came through.

The Packers are imploding, but at least Detroit got another win.

    --------------------

Damn aggies won, but at least the longhorns lost.

  7. Six of the first nine games this week were upsets, and two of the three Sunday afternoon games have started that way. Glad I don't gamble.

Typical fucking NY Giants. Can't score a TD to force the Patriots to score a TD, and then can't keep the Patriots from getting into FG range (OK, 54 yards is not a chip shot). Typical fucking NY Giants.

Crazy day in the NFL today.

Can't say it hurts my feelings that the Cowboys haven't won a single game with Hardy on the field.

Hey, that's on you for betting on the we'll-find-a-way-to-lose-even-when-we're-winning NY Giants :D. I just wanted them to win to further bury the cowgirls. I will be extremely pissed-off if the 'girls somehow make the POs.

Hardy got into a shouting match with some fans in the end zone.

Golly gee, I can't imagine what they might've said to upset him .

Actually, even though I hate the cowgirls and think that Hardy should be in jail, buying a ticket doesn't give a fan the right to act like an asshole.

That's a good question. I think that he's injured. And I must give him credit for handling being benched like a pro.

Did I hear the Broncos fans booing the offense?

I have little hope for the Texans tonight against the Bengals. Maybe they can manage to keep it close.

Oh, I almost forgot--On paper little johhny looked like a real NFL QB, even without a running game. But nine points negated his efforts.

    -----------------------------

cowgirls fans need to quit bitching about the officiating. The coaches, namely goldenboy garrett, have allowed the team to implode.

You are correct. Peyton was injured several weeks ago, and it was aggravated last week.

Peyton Manning of Denver Broncos has torn plantar fascia in right foot

When I was in my early 20s I had some plantar fasciitis issues, it's no joke, and very painful.

I hate seeing this, as I've always been a Peyton fan. I'd much rather see him end his career going down swinging (throwing) in the playoffs than going out with a whimper due to injury. Hopefully Denver can hold on to a playoff spot w/o him and he can be back before the end of the year.

I don't really follow football, but I feel for Rashean Mathis. I don't even know how to spell his name, actually. It pisses me off that they aren't monitoring closer for TBIs. It's bullshit. :(

I think they are better off letting him sit for a couple of weeks and get 100% right.

They are 7-2. The second place teams in their division are tied for 4-5. Realistically they could go 9-7 or even 8-8 and probably win the division. They aren't likely to catch either of the undefeated teams for the playoff bye, so let him heal up.

It looks like Jerry Jones' leaders don't have to be on time to practice, or attend team meetings.
