The thing I dislike about Masterchef (and have watched some of the UK and quite a bit of the Oz one) is the amount of contestants who say "I really need this, my food dream is immense, I'll die if I lose Masterchef because my dream will be over". It makes you wonder why they didn't go, get an apprenticeship and do their 'dream' the way everyone used to do it before? Answer: Actually, I'd like to be on TV...

The Oz one, especially, seems to be less about the food and more about the drama. They are heading into the 6th season here (I think), and I think the quality of the contestants has been declining over that time. Maybe Oz doesn't have that much of a talent pool of amateurs to choose from. Still, it is a cut above a lot of the other crap on TV. There ability to get access to some amazing chefs from all around the world is pretty stunning.

Never have seen this show. The name sounds vaguely familiar, but no clue on any details without doing an internet search.

This has more to do with what the producers have asked the contestants to say. The whole, "I need this" is pure fabrication. Most of the drama is as well.

The Oz version has to have more drama because they air the bloody thing five days a week! The drama is filler that serves the function of drawing the viewers in, just the way a good soap opera does. It's storytelling 101 just applied to "reality".
