It's on my list, I just love Burke's so much that I have a hard time plunking down that much money somewhere else when I get the opportunity to go downtown and do that. I love that Burke's has world class steaks AND it has "foodie" type appetizers, sides, and desserts. It's not just a giant baked potato and some asparagus, or creamed spinach. And every single time I go there they comp me something without me even asking. Last time it was a free piece of cheesecake and a free side. We were discussing what sides to order with the other couple we met for dinner. There was one we were debating on whether to add to our order or not, and ended up not because we figured we'd have plenty of food. The server ended up bringing us that side in addition to what we ordered and comp'd it because he overheard that we almost ordered it. The time before that we were discussing which of three desserts to order, only ordered one, and the server brought all three and comp'd two of them. On one hand a $10-15 side or dessert is a small fraction of what a bill is at a place like that. But still it IS a free $30-50 they are spotting you when they do that. And the last time I went there I paid with a gift card I bought during their 20% Christmas sale, and because I had eaten there in the last two months and made my reservation online, the food portion of my bill was also discounted 20%. So with that combination of discounts it was an incredible deal for us. That's a big deal to me. Especially since most of my eating out in Chicago is on my dime, not an expense account, as opposed to when I travel. I'm going to have to try Cut though.

As far as wine lists, even though I am a wine guy, it kills me to pay for good wine in a restaurant. Mainly because I keep a lot of good wine at home, and I often know just how much the mark-up is. It doesn't always stop me, but that is one of the few things that irk me at nice restaurants. :p

Dude, it's all about corkage. I always call a fine restaurant, see if they have a corkage fee: many if not most do, and you can bring your own damn bottle of wine. Considering how much they mark up alcohol, you can get an excellent $30 bottle of wine at a wholesale wine and spirits reseller someplace, bring it to a restaurant, and even paying $15 corkage, you're still drinking a bottle of wine for $45 that the restaurant would probably charge $75 or $80 for.

Speaking of great restaurants, we had dinner the other night at Due Lire in Lincoln Square, and it was awesome. Little Italian place, small but excellent menu, superb execution, good presentation and service. Totally worth it. Highly recommend.

Good tips, I just never think far enough ahead to bring a bottle. I need to start doing that.

I had lunch at cut on MLK day. I couldn't eat a steak but had a patty melt and skogafoss had a steak sandwich. It was awesome. Lobster Mac and cheese was good too.

Sounds like Cut is going to have to be a priority at some point.
