Here's what's difficult about that, though--sustaining the output. I wrote about 25k words last week in the span of 3 days. When you're on fire, you're on fire, and the story just flows. But then you hit a wall (yesterday) and it's a struggle to even get out a thousand words.

Maybe it needs a blowjob, as @hamsterball would likely suggest.

I would guess that those who write "smut" for publication cover the entire spectrum of risque-ness, from authors with boring sex lives to those who have adventureous sex lives. I suppose that on average their sex lives might be a little more interesting. There's really no way to know for certain, which leads us back to the survey with questionable accuracy. I've always suspected that most people tend to embellish & exaggerate their sex lives in surveys

I've never looked into the profile of the average American.

True, I've wanted to write a novel for years, I KNOW I'd be at least passable at it, and perhaps good, but its really work when it comes down to it, hard, and frustrating work. Last night after an easy to write introduction I had to get to our first actual encounter. Now this was a long time ago and honestly I don't recall anything but the major details, and I found it hard to transition from narrative style to dialog. Part of my problem is I've always read the best authors, reading less than stellar authors is what makes me realize I could write, but I compare myself not to those hacks but the greats. This is not very useful in terms of development of your own skills. What I most likely need to do is just suck it up, realize I won't be perfect at it and get it on the page before being over critical that its not on the same level as a life long professional author.

This is pretty much it. You've got to turn off your inner editor.

I'm speaking mainly of the likelihood. To get to the point where you're writing erotica books and publishing them for others to read suggests to me a disposition towards things sexual. That these folks skew towards more adventurous sexual activity (than the average of a relatively conservative nation) doesn't surprise me, and it's not that the numbers are wildly unbelievable. It doesn't take much to be able to tick off "I've experimented with BDSM." Even someone as repressed and undersexed as me can do that without lying.

It's not pretty. (I'm being facetious. The point is the comparison to the average.)

I thought that there was a 'writing tips' thread on TFP 5. My searches say not found.

There have been a few different flavors of writing threads, if I recall correctly. They could do a novel writing one.

That was something I wrote for TFP in 2005, I have always been rather happy with it, if only I had a story to go with it.

Poets, writers, the comparison is apt. It's also a line from the play Brigadoon. As far as conclusions, you can conclude anything you want. Doesn't always mean you're right (I have fallen into this camp many times as well).

For the record, I wasn't consciously targeting you in reference to tentacle porn. I just listed the most ridiculous obviously speculative porn that popped into my head in the middle of the night. I could also have gone with alien/human porn. There aren't a whole lot of purely speculative options out there, because most of them have already been tried.

And let me just conclude by saying that my tone on the original article was dismissive, and I didn't bother to research the validity of an anonymous survey of fiction writers. But there were no hard feelings meant by it. Obviously it seemed to ruffle the feathers of a couple people who then proceed to make judgments on me. So I bow out. I'm not here to piss people off, and if they get offended over a couple comments on a fairly trivial topic then I'm out of the discussion.

...Are you referring to the "People of Walmart" types..? Fat, pasty white, lower-middle-class conservative, painfully-un-self-aware troglodytes often spouting moral bullshit?

Undersexed? You? Now the "repressed" part I can believe, but I'm not so sure about the undersexed part...

Holy shitballs - I wasn't yet married to my high-school sweetheart of several years, but other than that my experience largely matches as far as her and my "best friend" running off together and leaving me for dead. I even had to move back into my parents' house after the experience left me too emotionally devastated, alone, and dysfunctional to focus on college and thus failed out. Fucking people.

Started a new story today, and I'll admit that the heroine this time around is a bit more me than not, though I think she's a bit more alpha than I am. Though the piece itself is not grounded in any kind of reality resembling my own (in this story, she is attempting to seduce three men without them knowing), the character's actions resemble those I would take, and one instance is straight out of real life.

I too put myself into the moment of what I am writing about because I am one of those "do unto others" types and it has worked well for me. I don't become aroused about what I am writing but sometimes after a long bout of expression....I am reminded how good it was by reaching down to feel that I have a huge wet spot..If I am stimulating my cerebellum it jump starts my lubricious flow below...lol....my proofreader who is female critiques my stories by how many orgasms she has. Writing style is everything when it comes to erotica..climbing inside the mind takes skill and is also very delicate, by not using expletives unless it highlights the theme of the story....One day I will share with the TFP family....

You sound like you belong in the Harlequin skillset judging by your writing style although it's ok to be gritty.....I love stories about assertive women. All of the women that I have been with have been strong and assertive..not being afraid to forge forward...knowing their bodies..mind..needs and what qualifies as fulfillment and contentment....

Gritty isn't something I do well any more because it's just not where my head is.

Please accept my apology if you took it as an insult because I was simply reading your writing style and that is all....As a writer, we don't start out knowing where we fit until someone either critiques you or place your style to fit a certain genre.....For example, my writing style as I am told by my proofreader who is a woman, fits a genre that attracts women who like steamy detail but also like real descriptive situations they can relate to when they read...if it moves you to stop and go find your favorite BOB...then my work is done...so I am told...there is no right way or wrong way to be gritty because someone who reads you will like you for your grittiness.....this means you should never hold back...write what you feel...you will feel what you write......wet spot?

We're cool. I tend to skew towards fluffy meets kinky. My stuff is probably a little too on the verge for pure Harlequinesque stuff; I've read a lot of romance over the years, and they tend to stay away from some of my favorite things: domination, spanking, and explicit oral, to name a few things.

As a scientist, I'm a big proponent of research. The problem I find is that, when I'm conducting this research, I usually forget to write up the results.

Sex in the office is seriously fun. There's the strategic planning to avoid detection, and it's really hot when you can carry it off.

Also...the idea of doing in the Louvre just strikes me as freakishly awesome. I may just have to add that to my bucket list.

With resigned acceptance he allowed her to kiss him, but he was used to these unwanted advances. He knew it was his own fault, never daring to come out to his friends. They were always so envious of him and his good looks, of how women would come up to him and introduce themselves without him even trying to get their attention. They called him a player because he never had a girlfriend but went home with so many, and he had to admit he enjoyed their admiration, if not the act. He tried to dump this one off on Jeromy but that quickly went no where, and she had the eyes of a predator staring at him the whole night. All he could think of would the Cialis be enough for him to keep the performance going, or would he need to use one of his excuses? "Just turn off the lights and pretend its Todd." he told himself. A little courage did briefly pulse through his thoughts, perhaps this would be the last time and the life of lies could actually stop.

    (Just having fun ;) )
