Just heard there was a school shooting in Ohio, at least 5 shot.

I think people like using simple, "common sense" explanations to trick themselves into believing that they understand complex situations.

Me? I blame Jesus. No follower of Crom would do something like this.

Well, I was just a little surprised to find an argument about your argumentativeness breaking out in a thread about a kid mowing down classmates in Ohio. However, knowing your naturally irascible nature, I would volunteer for said fight...

Now, to the point of the thread. What can you say about situations like this? I suppose I'll probably follow up the information as it comes out as to what exactly was going through this kid's head, but really I just mourn a bit, in that passive I'm-a-thousand-miles-away-and-don't-know-them kind of way, for the families that are putting their kids in the ground this weekend - and couldn't have seen this coming a week ago. Awful.

School shootings are so popular in the US that they have their own theme songs:

 

I blame it on the Heavy Metal music the kids listen to today.

I don't know that age is necessarily a significant factor when it comes to mass killings.
I assume that the same sorts of things motivate teenage school shooters as, say, adult McDonald's shooters.
Which is usually related to some sort of paranoid-narcisisstic personality disorder.
I do have my own theory about the effect that our shallow materialistic culture has on the development of personality and the perception of others...but I have to go to work now.

 

This isn't exactly a new phenomenon. School shootings have been going on for generations - probably since the beginning of the mass production of firearms. And before that, it was stabbings or sword fights or something equally deadly. Shakespeare memorialized one such fight in "Romeo and Juliet" after all.

 

It's too rare that these young shooters (or any shooters looking to mow down as many people as possible) survive to provide insight into the why's of their actions. When they do, those in a position to learn more about the nature of such things seem more focused on assuring the public that the threat has been extinguished. Do they bother to delve into the why of such things, I wonder? Whether they do or not, how often do we hear about the motivations or psychology behind these events?

Or maybe it's out there and we've lost interest once the shootings are no longer front page news. Maybe we're satisfied lapping up the pablum that they're all isolated incidents, crimes committed by "crazy" people, which defy explanation. That they have no connection to each other and are not at all a reflection on our way of life or a symptom of it. "our shallow, materialistic culture" is certainly at the top of my theory list too, MM.

As stated before, I can't make sense of this shit. Some kid gets pissed off and marginalized. I understand that. Walking in with a .22 and shooting classmates down? Never occurred to me as a kid, and I grew up as an awkward not-cool kid in an area where guns were a plenty.
