Is porn ruining our love lives?

I see porn much like something like Facebook - the effect it has on people says more about the people than the thing itself. Some people will find porn as a driver for their own insecurities, some will use it as an escape, some as an inspiration, some as a way to become closer to ones they want to, etc. Rather than pointing to porn as a solution or symptom, people need to look inward and find the root causes.

 

In my formative years porn was printed material, unless you had a Super 8 projector, which I didn't.

Porn gave me many ideas about what I'd like to try, but somehow I knew that real sex with real women in real life would not be like sex in porn. You could say Penthouse Variations and Cosmopolitan (back when it was a good magazine) provided a balance of sorts.

But for the generation that grew up with easy access to porn, yes, I can see unrealistic expectations as a potentially real problem. Especially for those who don't have at least some reality checks.

 

Don't have too much of a strong (or even formed) opinion on this one. Mainly just bits and pieces that will continue to develop over time.

I used to be very pro-porn, but in recent years I am increasingly getting the impression that for many guys of my generation (starting puberty when the internet, and thus porn access, really took off) its 24/7 access has caused severe issues in their sexuality, especially in relation to women; whether through causing damage to their relationships due to porn addiction, erectile dysfunction, unrealistic/unhealthy expectations of sex, massive objectification of women as part of their formative years, impotence due to Madonna-Whore complex, etc etc etc.

The very general thought for me is that my former stance on porn/casual sex was far more self-serving in nature than anything remotely to being a true follower of the sex-positive mindset. Just my anecdotal perspective, but there's very few hetero guys that wouldn't greatly enjoy women taking their clothes off so it naturally follows to egg them on in maximizing skin exposure and, ultimately, promiscuity (=> increasing access to, and thus likelihood for, sex).

I have a (currently) fleeting suspicion that the hyper-availability of sex - both digital and physical - may actually end up turning out to be a bad thing for society as a whole, affecting men and women equally badly (albeit differently). I recognize it's a pretty complex topic, and am mainly waiting for more literature and results of large-scale, long-term studies deeply and thoroughly assessing this topic to be published before I'd cement my thoughts on it in any way.

Its one of those things I don't really grok, and there is a certain bit of racism involved which makes me uncomfortable. Its kinda like the racism of low expectations, if not the same thing, its like the black dudes "don't count" as people, just sex toys. This is a thing in swinging for some, mostly the 50-60 crowd. Back when I was active online in swinging discussions someone said his reason for only having his wife with black guys was because he knew she would never leave him for a black man, and even though that was at least 10 years ago it still struck me as "wrong" on many levels. i think the BBC is more of a fantasy thing either for the women or the men. ive seen a few where they remove their pants and it slaps the woman in the face. but if thats your thing then go for it. not me personally. i agree with @Herculite if my woman was with another man i would want him to be a nice respectful guy.

 

It is just one of those conspiracy theories that I have, but I did see it happening in October of 2016 where black guy porn was posted a lot more frequently. And in the comments were a lot of pissed off white dudes getting angry.

 

I doubt that there was a massive increase in porn production just to piss off white guys. The current explosion is on "Step Sister/Brother/Mother/Father" porn and I can't see how that would be targeted for anything, and I find that far more off than any interracial porn and the "step" is just put in there to avoid any backlash, its really more about incest.

The porn industry these days is so fragmented and I'll assume its just copy cat from a huge less increasingly less profitable per worker industry. I can't see any pattern.

I don't know what country they are in either, as this would be an easy thing for a foreign organization to do.

The issue is that one political party needs large numbers of white men to vote for them. And while nobody polls white guys on how they feel, I have a feeling that it isn't a small percentage that don't like seeing black guys sleeping with white girls instead of them. And if one party runs on punishing and jailing black guys, while the other one promotes diversity, it isn't too big of a jump to know that showing these people interracial porn all over the websites they go will impact their political choices.
