not really... we are elsewhere tho. I can invite you there, just say you want to be invited to the FB chat.

    I don't think it's still around. I haven't been on there for years. :(

The current solution (FB chat) is all well and good, but it's also very different from the old TFP Chatroom, which, admittedly, I do miss.

Unfortunately I do not have a facebook profile. This is and has been the only forum where I'm active. I've put a lot of trust in the people here, possibly too much. But I have no interest in the massive overexposure and data mining that occurs on Facebook. I trust them not one bit with my info or pictures.

This is among the most compelling reasons, IMO, to keep any TFP-related chat functionalities independent of platforms like Facebook, which a not-small number of members have opted not to use. There's also a sense of exclusivity to the current FB chat—it's essentially invite-only—which I find off-putting.

I realize this is a bit of a quiet period right now on TFP, so there's probably less motivation for the admins to put effort into finding or setting up some other (non-FB) chat platform on account of lower anticipated participation.

Maybe a consideration for the future?

    I don't think it's unfortunate. I'm a never-Facebooker and proud of it!

Was never a fan of the FaceBook chat- although I was on it, I never participated even once. Getting a notification and then trying to get my bearings on a seemingly mile-long conversation was taxing my patience, and eventually I muted the thing.

It became academic after I deleted my FaceBook account back in 2018 anyway.

I just popped in to see - I don't think so? Probably taken over by other chat forms of communication....I see you have been hitting old threads @DamnitAll ....

edit: just saw all of these other responses. It's always interesting to see these reconsiderations of investment in this space as opposed to the evil of fb.

In theory I'd love to abandon fb.

you know...i keep coming back to this desire to think about how to re-engage this space, especially as i really dislike the facebook space. i feel like this is a post i made about five years ago as well....but i recall a discussion with someone like rat a LONG time ago where he was talking about reddit taking over the conversation space as a fungible quantity, and at the time i'd barely engaged reddit much....ok - maybe 10 years ago?....and thinking that the corporate shitpile of facebook and/or reddit would never replace the community that we had through this space.

and yet....here we are. i mean no disrespect to the people who are active now on tfp at all - but the traffic is down and the people i used to look forward to keeping up with through the space are all gone and spread out and if i see them it's in that fb chat - or sometimes arguing on fb about politics. given the reality of the fb filter algorithms...

but alas - i've been vacillating about dropping fb entirely - or perhaps just pulling back to only forwarding things related to professional or service. that galls me to think that the main space where public conversations are happening - or have the pretense of happening - is in that space...the desire to represent viewpoints, the reality of the way they're manipulated...the dislike of how our country (USA) is seemingly moving politically...

regardless - i keep toying with the idea of re-engaging here. this used to be my homepage essentially.

    Somebody has to step up.

Not having known supporters around can be a bit scary.

You won't know until you start posting.

I don't disagree with the Facebook qualities. It is poor segregated at best. It all looks the same so doesn't matter where you are, page, group, whatever people will act as they see fit so there's lots of moderation to do. I've been asked to become a Facebook Certified Community Manager a couple of weeks ago now. This is to train and certify people on their platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. While the forum admins have always shared tips together, there's really no comprehensive best practices put together in one space. This is exciting to me that they are doing this. While the Facebook overlords are going to be at the help, it does mean that if this takes there could be some actual money in community building instead of hobbiest turned into job.

interesting thoughts chris and cyn. ultimately, i think you're right chris: implementing it may be trickier, but i'm tired of the monotony of facebook. i think it's valuable to be able to participate in aggregate data mining that everyone under the sun performs to gauge public perception, but having the same arguments over and over and over and over....

cyn: are you suggesting that facebook may become a moderated space, or a more directly moderated space? also, is that a paying gig offer you're describing?

Facebook is providing the platform and tools, the brands and companies will provide the community builders and moderators.
