I use computers a lot, 99% MS Windows and Win7 is what I prefer and XP is in second place. Of cause it has it's problems and things I would like to different. All Windows versions are hogs on resources but I'm convinced that Win7 is not the worst of the lot. One of the thing I do with any windows machine that I have to use is to change the folders options to my liking so that may be the reason that I haven't noticed or overlooked the change or forgetfulness with sort options and such. I also tend to disable the windows search too.
The features I like are in security (parental control at home), HomeGroup (for home), stability (over previous versions) when running monsters like VisualStudio2010 and SQLserver management studio. It handles multiple networks better than XP did. It starts up faster than XP did on the same hardware. Then there are the nice to have features like tiling and fullscreen from windows placement and using multiple monitors and DLNA support.
I'm starting to sound like a M$ salesperson I better lie down until this passes.
My conclusion is if you are using Windows OS then Win7 is very likely to be the best option. BTW I'm not impressed with the Win8 pre-release I tested except for the fact it runs on multiple hardware platforms (desktops , tablets and phones not limited to one line of cpu's/chipsets).
