Effective training and education generally makes one less stupid and reckless.

There is little or no training requirement to own a firearm and (in most states) obtain a concealed carry permit.

is this the case in all the police shootings we see? You know the ones where they pump someone with 20, 30, 40 and in the latest, 120+ bullets. Effective training doesn't always mean one is less stupid. It just means they're trained idiots.

i dont understand why there is such opposition to arming a couple people at every school. i mean go ahead and ban everything. there's literally no defense against someone walking in with serious firepower and doing this again. it's shooting fish in a barrel. the guns will always be readily available.

The epidemic of gun violence is not limited to schools.

    Neither should a comprehensive solution.

i never implied that was a comprehensive solution. banning guns isn't a solution either.

Sure it is. It just isn't one that people find acceptable.

yes simply writing a law that outlaws a couple hundred million firearms will make the violence just go away. the guns will simply ceast to exist. liberal la la land

maybe we should write a law that outlaws all drugs and the drug problem will simply cease to exist.

I am looking forward to the NRAs "meaningful contributions" to a comprehensive solution. We'll see if its more the same bullshit we see from the most ardent gun rights crowd or a new found willingness to even consider reasonable gun control measure as part of the solution.

A meaningful start from them would be to restore funding for research on violence and guns: The N.R.A.'s Blockade on Science - NYTimes.com

What would have happened in each of the cases redux cited, if the "law abiding citizens with a right to carry a weapon on them" weren't given permission by the state to carry a weapon on them? If they were forced to do what the rest of us assholes do when someone pisses us off? Yeah, suck it up, swallow it, and walk away.

These yahoos think having a weapon holstered to their sides gives them a pass on having to control themselves. Endowed with special powers granted to them by the bastardization of the 2nd amendment, they can set these punks straight once and for all. No longer do they have to worry about the fact that they don't possess the balls to stand up to them man to man. Hell no, they got a gun now. That'll teach 'em.

How many people like this do you know or run across every day? I know too many. I don't want them carrying guns around. I don't want them walking into a shop or standing in line with one of my children. But there's nothing stopping them from doing whatever the hell they want. Nothing stopping them until they've already killed someone. Sorry, not fucking good enough.

These guys are cowards. Cowards the state has armed. Cowards that normally wouldn't say shit if they had a mouthful. Guns strapped to their sides changes all that.

So yeah, I blame the state for arming cowards (and their bully counterparts) and sending them out amongst the rest of us who manage to get by just fine verbally confronting the disrespectful asshole in line or, simply keeping our mouths shut when we walk by a car full of teenagers playing Satan's music.

I'm seriously at the point where I don't give a shit about your right to bear arms. It doesn't trump my right to life.

keep throwing 'reasonable' around. we know it means no private ownership of firearms. how much of this the left will get out of the current disaster remains to be seen.

i still think we should let the people who hand guns off to known criminals (fast and furious) decide the fate of private gun ownership.

from an absolutist perspective on the 2nd amendment, everyone killed or maimed in gun-related violence is merely collateral damage.

Really? Canadians can own guns privately. Why do so many think it's an all-or-nothing proposition?

Not having a criminal or mental health record is not an indication of how responsible someone will be.

you do realize you described a significant portion of the police force throughout america to a t?

state sponsered violence is always accepted though.

it doesn't, but i think they'd prefer to see it more like new york. ccw's are as rare as bigfoot from what i hear.

and back to another ultra-right canard: that possessing a weapon makes you somehow free.
you might as well argue that political consciousness follows from the socks you wear.
if you have a slave mentality and accumulate guns, then you're a slave with guns.

armed neo-fascists protecting "us" from the Man.
i can't imagine anything less awesome.

Because if it is all or nothing, they don't have to talk about compromise. Perhaps nothing is more frightening to a gun extremist than having the subject of their most ardent defenses made prosaic by people whose imaginations aren't quite as inspired by them.

Most focus on the police or the military regarding the repressive state apparatus. They don't seem to think beyond that as far as the practical application of guns is concerned. You know, guns vs. courts, correctional systems, lawmakers, etc., doesn't seem too realistic.

I suppose many of them think "live free or die."

At least the death thing is certain. Many know, on the contrary, that America isn't quite the freest place on earth.

The best thing about neo-fascists in America is that they have political power to a relatively substantial degree, so it's not so much as protecting themselves from the Man as it is about getting those pesky liberals out of power.

If only those pesky centrists would get out of the way of the libertarian utopia.
