Game Of Thrones Season 3: Chaos Preview
"What is real?" Watch a Season 3 tease.
    Published on Feb 10, 2013

(Featuring Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen) as the narrator.)

"Chaos isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder.
Many who try to climb it fail, never get to try again. The fall breaks them.
And some given the chance to climb, they cling to the realm, or the gods, or love.
Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is."

Don't miss the season 3 premiere on March 31st, 2013.

Still have not seen or read anything about this. I think that finding Book 1 would be the easiest way to start if I ever do.

If HBO has done anything right, at least they haven't maintained the maddening slowness of Dany's journey per the books. Her character is a hard read in the books just for that reason alone. Thankfully, HBO knows how to make a series and captured her frustrations flawlessly without sacrificing us to mind-numbing repetition. I'm also liking the cast additions and it appears the casting directors have hit their spots yet again... time will tell if this is true or not.

The same goes for Cersei. Holy Old Gods, Cersei's parts in the last two books are excruciating with few exceptions.

I imagine this is what happened to Robert Jordan as he built his gargantuan story. At least the first three books of A Song of Ice and Fire were good.

Looking back, I think Martin would have been better served to have gone with the 5 year gap as originally planned. Really. I could have easily skipped 5 years of Cersei and Dany considering what was achieved.

Wait. Am I getting my books mixed up? Fuck. I can't remember what is going on half the time in this epic. It is one frustrating part about such a large story with such large characters, the story is almost so big that unless you are some devoted superfan a.k.a. Lordeden it is easy to forget some things.

It's like he's put them in a holding pattern. The story has ground to a crawl.

It's not just the size. It's also because it's convoluted. It folds in on itself and becomes repetitious.

Several times, I thought, "Yes, Mr. Martin, Cersei is a queen bitch. We get it. Now write a plot development already."

The plot has all but turned into maelstrom.

To that, add "words are wind" several times, have characters obsessively use catchphrases, have people say "leal" this and "leal" that, describe every meal and outfit to the last detail, and describe every inconsequential female character by her waist measurement and breast size, and you have yourself a bloat piece of shit.

Yeah, but I guess they were okay. It's George R. R. Martin, right?

What I like about the show is that they can fix/remove the things that don't work right in the books.

What is most interesting is that Martin is exec producer for the show. I wonder just how much input he has other than being a glorified consultant. I really see him only as someone who can comment on if they have the look of lands and the characters correct more so than if they are getting his plot correct. I mean, there is no way they could stick to what he's written and have a successful show.

As far as if the books were good just because of who wrote them... well, no. I found them to be a waste of money but I'll probably pick up the next one just because I've already come this far, I may as well finish it out. IIRC, the books didn't take off until a decade or more after he wrote them. I have no idea what created the buzz to begin with since HBO wouldn't have given it a second glance if there wasn't some success of the novels in play. Martin reminds me of King, except King actually listens to his editors and speeds things along. Martin just adds everything and limps to the finish.

So if anything, this is one case where the show/movie is actually better than the book. It isn't often I say that but I can't find a redeemable quality in the books to change it.

I was referring to his earlier capabilities. Not just with ASOIF, but as an editor and writer of not-so-epic fantasy. We know he has what it takes to tell a good story and to do a lot with big plots. He does have a track record.

Upon publication in 1996, the first book won the Locus Award and was nominated for the Nebula Award and the World Fantasy Award.

The second book (1998/1999) won the Locus Award again and was nominated for the Nebula Award.

The third book (2000) won the Locus Award and the Geffen Award, and was nominated for the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award (kind of a big deal; it lost to Harry Potter).

The first three books, at least, were well-received by critics as well.

I think it was at that point that the series really started to get people to take notice. It was also the time when Martin kind of veered into his current mess in fictioneering the series. The dog's breakfast that is the fourth book took another five years to get published, followed by the six book, which took another six years after that despite it being virtually the same book.

The thing to remember as well is that the fantasy genre has a love/hate relationship with the mainstream. Often written off as unserious literature, it also isn't viewed in the same light as science fiction, which has undergone at least some legitimization. It wasn't until the '90s that fantasy was even considered its own viable genre. Even then, a fantasy book being on the NYT bestsellers list is usually the exception, not the rule.

Harry Potter changed a lot of that, but the genre is still evolving (it's also relatively young).

Cash cow authors have this problem. Rowling had this problem too. The more lucrative the books are as a product (vs. art), the less power the editorial/publishing team has, especially when the author production side of things becomes a bit of an issue as in Martin's case. He made his fans ravenous, only to feed them slop in the end.

The first three are fine. After that, it's all, like, WTF?

Even then, if you aren't into sprawling epic fantasy, you probably won't like them that much.

Here's a little tidbit (or spoiler, if it's right) that I found on Wikipedia, which has a great entry of house histories.

Spoiler: Jon Snow isn't Ned Stark's bastard son. He's Ned Stark's nephew, the illegitimate son of Lanae Stark, Ned's sister and Reaghar Targaryen!
