My initial reaction to the Ghomeshi's Facebook post was chances are good he wasn't fired simply for having an unconvential sex life, not in this day & age. If (IF) the accusations against him prove to be true, his firing might stand legally.

It's really hard to know how to take it. He could be telling the honest truth; he could be an abuser and trying to cover it up; he could also be telling what he thinks is the honest truth and have coerced partners into going along with something that they were not OK with.

    Two things:

    1) There is a police investigation now that at least two women have officially come forward.

    2) Certain BDSM activities are actually illegal in Canada, i.e., you can't give consent to have someone abuse you. In other words, whether or not consent was given might be beside the point.

As someone with no horse in this race, it seems just really odd that a couple of women, out of the blue, would make up similar stories about at best a low level celeb. The unfortunate thing is they didn't go to the police first. This could be a smear campaign of sorts, but why? Who gains?

It's not out of the blue. And going to the police would have possibly been unfortunate as well. (One woman did go to her employer, with her own disappointing results.)

It's nine women now, with three that are speaking to the police.

I didn't quite say that right then, I mean the idea that they were just making this up doesn't seem logical.

Ah, okay. You meant it rhetorically?

There was a lot of back-and-forth discussion online between those supporting the women who decided to speak out and those supporting Ghomeshi (based on his Facebook post). Many were appalled at the thought of blindly supporting/believing Ghomeshi based on how things unfolded (a lot went down a certain way that people who haven't been following might not realize).

Many were angry at the CBC after what, at first, seemed like an unceremonious firing based on Ghomeshi's "unconventional" sexual practices. When it came to light that there was, instead, the issue of sexual aggression, intimidation, and non-consensual violence (legal or not), people started seeing why the CBC did what they did (and how they did it). Ghomeshi is unionized. He was one of their most popular and well-known hosts. They're not going to drop him like that unless something is seriously amiss.

There are those who work in the culture industry who weren't surprised when this went down. People knew things about him for a long time now.

Wow, I'm gone for a month or two and the legendary infamous mixedmedia returns in the very first thread i read. People talked like you were gone for good.

Back on topic though, I've thought about this subject many times before, ever since I discovered the existence of online subcultures and fetishes and such - I always wonder if the macho conservative dudes I know in the military might be secretly gay/bi or whatever, or if the stoic super-clean housewives I meet have some weird fetish. I think I've gotten used to the idea at this point; as long as it was something that really didn't affect my life, then it's just a detail of someone else' life - unless we share the fetish, then we could either hook up if said person is single/female, or else maybe pool knowledge of online communities and resources.

Post was from a year ago, dude. MM split shortly thereafter. Unfortunately for all of us.

Oh right, for some reason my brain saw that it was posted in December 2013 and registered that as "recently..." But that was almost a year ago now that I think about it... I can't believe 2014 is almost over already!

Oh well, hopefully Street Pattern's right and she is indeed back! The more the merrier!
