You give yourself way too much credit, @Remixer. I've had you on "ignore" on and off for a year. Please don't assume I'm talking to you--ever--unless I specifically call you out as you did me, right here in this thread.
So you know, I clicked "read ignored posts" because you have dominated this thread and I wanted to know what others were responding to.
Also, I'd appreciate you ignoring me--like, forever.

I have often wondered about the validity of the wage gap 77% argument. For example, when I used to talk to teachers about their retirement plans we would go over their pay and steps. Those were laid out on the county website. If you had x amount of education and x years of service you made this much. No mention of male or female. Now I could see this hypothectical happen. Two married teachers with children. The wife often ends uo taking more of the childcare and house running. The male says I'm going to school to increase my pay. The wife says great, I wish I jad the time for that.
In my job as a trooper, there is no salary difference for men and women. I imagine it is the same for most if not all gov't jobs. But if you factor in time off for taking care of sick kids, parents, maternity leave, etc, then an imbalance can develop. A female teacher takes a year off for maternity, that is a year gone from her step and also a year of no contributions to her pension. But she is making the same as any other teacher with say 8years and a masters plus 48.

Reread the post and get back to me. I find it amusing how many people think that for some reason men and women are going to be exactly the same from a mental standpoint, even when evidence clearly shows that men and women react differently as a whole to various stimuli. Somehow its ok to say men and women have differences physically, but not mentally, thats PC incorrect.

HowStuffWorks "Male and Female Brain Structure"

    NOT THE SAME.

I personally know female engineers, and some are quite brilliant. That doesn't mean that their will be an even distribution of brilliant male or female engineers.

If a student handed me a report using the article you quoted, they would receive 0 points for that source. Even if it does have citations, half the citations lead to other crummy articles, not peer-reviewed sources. Try again.

@herculite I had this impression that men are better engineers than women when I was in college. Now I had had too many women Co-workers that impression is gone.
I had same impression about driving. But after having lived in four different countries that has changed too. It is just some people are better in certain things because they care or had experience.

I hear lot of generalized statements on both directions. Mostly I later discover they are wrong. Example: women are better in multitasking. But none on the women I know well are. (I am a man. 6 years ago I was terrific in multitasking at work. Now I am not. It is by choice.) Another example: I once heard in FM radio that women are better than men being jet pilots at high altitude. Now I Google there is no citation.

And yes tfp is like rugby. Stubborn people. Can't help it.

To suggest that "modern feminism" is anything like what you appear to be describing it as is to fail to have read much of this thread.

    a) feminism is not a unified whole. There are many positions one could take, with the vast majority simply seeking some form of equality.
    b) there are extremes in most movements and to equate anyone on the fringe as representative of the whole is weak. If they even exist, women who "are not just pro-choice, but encourage abortions and laud them" are outliers.

The whole point I was making about the word feminazi is that it is a reaction to an extreme position that has been used to paint the whole movement as wrong-headed. It is a reactionary response to a small, but vocal minority. The fact that so many are willing to embrace such a word again shows how deeply misogyny is seated in our culture.

Again, I don't consider myself exempt from that criticism.

Unrelentless reality. Who needs it when you can have drama and handwringing?

It's funny how you can avoid talking about feminism on a rational level when you're focused on radicalism. Convenient, even.

  11. Gender awareness? great topic, and one I have recently given some thought to as I seem to be reminissing alot lately. Having a sister would have sped up the process of gender awarness, one would assume. Since I only had my brother, I may have developed this kind of awarness a little slower than some of my friends. We learned a lot of "lifes lessons" watching "Leave it to beaver" and "Ozzie and Harriet.". This would be equivelent to "the Brady bunch" for some of you. I'm sure I picked up quite a bit through television sad to say. These shows probably did us more harm than good, but thats another topic.
I have a very, very vivid recollection of my first sexual urge. The pinnacle of gender awareness. I was 7 and my brother and I were at theater watching a movie with Gina Lollabridgeda. , An Italian actress, a cuter younger version of Sophia Loren (very sultry ). It was a scene from the movie and a moment some 56 years ago, and a moment I will necver forget . She was scantilly clad in a nearly "see through" sheer top. I didn't exactly understand the feeling but for the first time in my young life I realized something was different about women, at least that woman... and I liked it.
P.S, " it " didn't actually move but the process was underway.
perhaps Ill start a thread about what happened a couple of years later when I had a similar experience with a picture of a gal in a magazine, and how I dealt with it then.

Perhaps instead of simply accepting that it happens, we should question the fact that our socioeconomic system sees it as fair to penalize women for doing something that only they are biologically capable of for a couple of decades and that is necessary to the continued survival of the species.

And, add to this, of course, that the United States is the ONLY developed nation without paid parental leave and one of only FOUR in the whole world! The other three are Liberia, Papua New Guinea, and Swaziland. The Family Medical Leave Act only provides for unpaid time off.

Because American leaders are cheap bastards. (both corp & govt)
    As simple as that.

Unless you're talking about guns...which I don't mind, but we've got other things to spend money on too
...IF you're going to spend the money at all...which is another story.

    But I digress...

It's not just that they are cheap. It has way more to do with the American... "Find your own, I got mine", that runs through the US mindset.

It can be found elsewhere but not to such a degree as it is there (and it's only there that it's entrenched as policy).

It will, ultimately, lead to the US downfall.

Where in my post do I indicate that i approve of the status quo? I was simply trying to illustrate an observation of mine. Please don't jump to conclusions. The point was that I don't think the 77% number is accurate. Maybe when that number first came out, but not 30 years later. But that doesnt mean that I don't believe there is an issue.
My mom had to retire from her teaching position when she was pregnant with my older sister in 1969. By the time I came along she was able to work while pregnant with me in 1973. So she lost a year of service with my sister. So assuming...you know where that leads. Oh snap!

Penalize is an odd choice of words here. My wife stays at home mostly. Its not that she dosen't work but she gets the majority of the time with the kids and at home. Its not a penalty, its a gift.

It is a penalty as long as the value of the individual is measured by his or her ability to effect the production of consumable goods or services. You as a family are sustainable, but only because your income offsets the freeloading of your wife and children and results in a positive net income.
