what a shame, so many animals killed for no reason :( (I blame the whacko that released them, not the people who were forced to put them down)

Well, hell, *I* like animals more than people. That's certainly not out of the ordinary.

I wasn't aware the guy was married, though. Damn. Even though they shouldn't have been hoarding the animals, I do feel sorry for his wife, to a point.

And not ENTIRELY related, but exotic animal auctions? What the fuck? Why is that even allowed to happen?

    Ourcrazymodern? still, wondering

I'm guessing somebody has to pay for their upkeep. The zoo can't afford it. How could the suicide? Does anyone know how he was feeding them?

  4. One of the big cat sanctuarys in america was on a television show - I think about horses. I remember horses that had died of natural causes at a horse rescue were gifted to the big cats. Cheapest way to get rid of the corpses too I should think. I knew of one slightly questionable sanctuary that would get left overs from a sandwich shop, and these were used for chickens, cats and pigs. The zoos here buy native ponies for one pound each, dartmoors and new forest ponies at auction for one pound each. I assume your own native horse population is also dispersed in such a manner. Not old horses, most are yearlings - price of life a pound, which I think is about $2.
Its always the animals that get to pay. I still have hope for the monkey - they are only assuming he was eaten. Planet of the Apes type of ending for him, loads of adventures - some non sexual interspecies love for the hopefully fugative, ending his days in quiet anonymity.

Sorry ourcrazymodern, nearby farmers were giving him dead animals and he was collecting up roadkill to feed them. I think there was also mention of local stores donating out of date stock.
Do you think they will bring in rules now about keeping such animals, that the owners should have to prove competency, stability, security. They should certainly be encouraged to ask for help when an exotic pet becomes too much for them and their enviroment. Its much kinder to give away an animal with a chance of at least a happy ending, many, sad to say, all species, they give them away because they dont want to take that final trip to the vet, to hold it in familiar arms, and do the right thing. Many prefer to dump the ending on others. Do you think in future people may be made to have a licence if they choose to keep them?

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My. ;) I had to say it...

I think the people of Zanesville could be inconvenienced for 1 day while tranquilzers were rushed in. Set up some bait stations with meat, get news helicopters and citizens reporting the location if they see any of them. The Bears and Lions aren't endangered and I can see them shooting them. It's the tigers that I think they should have tried to catch and save.

I wonder what a tazer would do to a tiger.

Those animals should never go back to that place. That is just wrong. They need to get some new laws vs this kind of things ASAP. What happens when the wife goes crazy? 5 more get put down? This is almost as sick as people who own animals and the state shows up and it is not being taken care of. So they take the dog/cat/whatever animal. And the next week those people have a new pet. Because there is no laws.

  10. She has known for years that the conditions of the animals and her husbands mental state were less than ideal. His estate should pay for the police operation, the vets that flew in and tried to help. Transport, veterinary and miscallaneous costs incurred by those kind enough to take these vet bills in should also come out of his estate. Leave her with nothing. Its what she left those animals with when she turned her back on them. Have met dogs who were dumped because they didnt go with the new carpet etc.

  11. First of all, just got an email about the new TFP 5.0!!! Totally awesome.

Down to business. You have NO IDEA how aggravated and pissed I was about this. Once the escape hit the news, before they knew the owner even died, I just knew they would kill all those animals. Now don't get me wrong, I'm no intense animal rights activist guy. I do love animals and have had quite a few.

I mean come on, the people KNOW they are living next to a dormant volcano, in tornado alley, on a very shaky fault line, on the coast, and next to a zoo of potentially dangerous animals. If you don't like it, move. For living next to a zoo of animals, if you don't like it, protest. If you fail, move.

But no, it ALWAYS the animals fault to act on its instincts and act according to the natural food chain menu when they get hungry. "Oh, he got bit by a shark, we gotta hunt and kill it now". OMG, really?

These people knew animals can and HAVE escaped from a zoo before.

Ok, on to their excuse as to why they just had to kill the animals. I also blame animal lovers who are actually TRAINED and EQUIPPED to handle these kinds of animals and know how to catch them with minimal harm. There are PLENTY of people with this skill. If I were one, I would hop my butt on a plane and help rescue these animals. If the town wanted, they could have sat down, collected some emergency resources, made some calls and immediate plane reservations, and gotten this taken care of AT LEAST within the first 36 hours of escape.

Tornado on the loose? Get your butt to a building and stay safe.
Flooding in your area? Get your butt to higher ground and stay safe.
Earthquake occurring? Get your butt under something sturdy and stay safe.
Hurricane coming? Lock down your house and either stay safe or drive away and stay safe.
Animals on the loose? GET YOUR BUTT HOME, LOCK THE DOOR, AND STAY SAFE (preferably with a backup shotgun)!!!

All those situations are common sense and require you to suck it up, accept that nature happens, and ride it out. Your normal life may stop, but just for a few hours or less.

I just think they acted WAY to quickly on the shoot to kill solution and not think of other ways to save the animals.

Great to be back. Hope to hang around here a lot again.

EDIT: Ah, ok. I didn't know he went batshit crazy and released the animals and then killed himself. If I were a neighbor or someone living close to him and realized this guy was getting WAY over his head and a little crazed, I would have stepped up and said something. SOMEONE should have, and probably DID, notice that his marbles were starting to disappear and they should have said something. If I lived anywhere NEAR animals like that owned by a private resident, I would be keeping a close eye on his health and mental state. Again, some blame can be dished out to the neighbors and his close friends/relatives.

Tranqulizing was not an option. If the weight of the animal isn't know, then the drug amount is a guess. I'm not trimming in the woods to find a tiger I think I had enough drugs in the dart for. I think what happened was the best for the situation.

The guy had been released from jail just 3 weeks before this happened. My guess is that neighbors/etc. weren't necessarily aware of his release and therefore were not watching him closely, knowing that he'd had a caretaker taking care of all of the animals in his absence. From what I understand, no one saw this coming.
