Don't tell me what the poets are doing.

Try as I might, I can't bring myself to care about the opinions of some pseudo-celebrity, no matter how impressive his beard is.

A&E has every right to do what they think is right for their brand, and to suggest otherwise in any context is just silly.

Why is this even considered newsworthy?

    Money and fame.

Do any of us know what happened in Africa today?

Pretty much. I'm a public figure. I understand that. I watch my mouth pretty carefully.

Yeah, actually. Uganda passed a law making "aggravated homosexuality" worthy of a life sentence. WTF.

Me, too. But it's not like I have to choke back bigoted comments.

I believe it is the special responsibility of leaders to model respect for widely disliked minorities.

I think this battle is coming. What is acceptable speech when you are an employee of a private company or a public agency/school/department? And what about political or religious beliefs when your employer's beliefs differ, both verbal and non-verbal?

Now, I'm sure they are selling a lot of merchandise right now, nothing like getting those people to support the cause...and I don't know what the end goal is, for them to switch networks or to start their own network... I also don't know what their contract says.

The bigger question is how do you convince the people who watch Duck Dynasty that all men and women should be free to love whoever they want and have the same rights? How do you counter his version of history with what actually happened to black people back then? And, what is the reality today of how black people are living?

    Yes.

I don't agree with Robertson, but he has a right to his opinions. If A&E is going to make stars of a bunch of 'good ole boys,' some might use the word 'rednecks,' the network shouldn't be shocked by some of their comments. The reaction from A&E could be knee-jerk, or it could be calculated for maximum publicity.

This is a non-issue. I don't understand why people are even saying this.

If A&E didn't do something (or enough), it would have been a public relations disaster (or publicity for notoriety, if that's your view). They would have to end up seeming ignorant or insensitive to the remarks of one of the people on one of their shows, or they would have to support him. Otherwise, they'd just end up back-pedalling and doing what they did anyway but to much lesser impact.

It really isn't the kind of thing a media company should ignore, be insensitive to, or support.

I really don't get people who are criticizing A&E for what they did. At this point, they didn't "fire" him (they "suspended" him), nor did they can or sell off the show (yet, anyway). A lot of the flack A&E is taking is making Robertson out to be a victim.

    Which is fucking ridiculous.

Simply...the moral of the story is, if you're on TV
    remember that you're on TV.

  14. Any publicity is good publicity, for Robertson, for A&E, for all of the grandstanding politicians and pundits, and for all of the news outlets that keep the story alive.

News flash: the Robertsons are not just some backwoods "good ole boys." They are educated and shrewd businessfolk who have tapped into a very lucrative enterprise. I would not be surprised if this turned out to be all staged to hype the upcoming season of shows. I won't be watching, though.

I'm just disappointed to find out that Duck Dynasty isn't actually a reboot of Dynasty with ducks instead of humans.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

    A&E isn't really doing anything.
The shows for this coming season, including Phil, have already been shot.
If A&E had nads they would refuse to air those shows. Let's see them put their pocketbook where their mouth is.
What they are claiming to do is suspend him from future shooting which has zero impact on the near term future.
I'll bet anything they let this blow over and Phil never misses a show.

    Bingo.

Also, about two months ago Phil announced that he was going to be reducing the amount of time he is on the show.

If A&E really wanted to make a statement they'd hold off on airing the shows. Except they are in it for the money, not the morals.

    Well, they're not stupid.

But to say they aren't really doing anything is false, otherwise the Internet wouldn't have all the duck rage.

"Going to reduce the amount of time on the show" is still being on the show.

    Here. I found it.

Duck Dynasty’: Family Drama Over Fame Causing Serious Tension - Hollywood Life

Back in October he was making noise that he was going to completely leave the show. Other articles said he had one season left IIRC. Obviously trying to Google anything said by him about leaving back then is tough to find due to all the current stories you have to wade through.
