When explaining this election to my more regressive lefty friends and others on campus I like to use The Hunger Games as a metaphor. A lot of people agree with that, they just don't get that they're the Capitol. Donald Trump was a brick thrown through the window of a smug, entitled, elitist, urbanized group that utterly ignored an enormous portion of this country that's been utterly devastated since 2008 until they want someone to belittle or insult.

Telling people who live in a town without any traffic lights and a 50% poverty rate that they're a bunch of privileged racist oppressors just because of their skin color or genitals is not a winning strategy.

The problem is they were never told they were privileged racist oppressors, at least not in the way they decided to take it.
The minute the question of race, class, wealth distribution, or privilege a fair number of them stick their fingers in their ears and go NAH-NAH-NAH.
Then they call you a libtard.
I've tried many times to talk to folks on social media and had it wind up with the same kind of result.
I get insulted as an elitist, out of touch, politically correct, liberal, even though I've lived in trailer courts, voted both sides of the ticket, never went to college, and been every bit as close to the bone as any of them.
Hell, closer in some cases since I had to declare bankruptcy and watch a good portion of my life get washed down the drain.
For me that should make you more empathetic not less.
As a Jew I'm more aware of the crap my Muslim friends are being put through.

As a country we need to stand up and say, we are better than this.

I've seen exit poll numbers indicating that white people both with and without college degrees voted for Trump in strong numbers (both groups more than Clinton). Also, those earning more than $50,000 a year voted more for Trump than Clinton.

I think the core problem is the failed experiment of neoliberalism.

Clinton bore the banner of neoliberalism disguised as social progress, while Trump bore the anti-establishment banner. The problem is that Trump is potentially worse than a neoliberal: He may prove to be an uncontrollable enabler of neoliberals whose significant changes to the status quo just may usher in an era even more damaging than Reaganomics and Thatcherism.

To many of his supporters, he's viewed as a fixer of their problems. What's going to happen if (when?) he makes them worse?

Indicators so far, he ain't a Fixer.
Just an angrier flavor of the same ol', same ol'

    Same leaders.
No jobs. (govt isn't in control of that anyway...corporations are)
    Still backbiting and backrubbing...no movement.

The swamp will still be stagnant, just smellier and more toxic.

Hope it won't, but it will likely.
Hope I'm wrong, but I'm taking bets.
    Anyone??

I responded to this last night but apparently it was lost in the upgrade.

The term alt-right was the brainchild of Richard Spencer of the National Policy Institute, a white nationalist organization. Spencer and others like Jared Taylor of American Renaissance are the new voices of the the alt-right movement and Steve Bannon provided them with an outlet to expand their message to a larger audience through Breitbart News., where he was the executive chairman before becoming the CEO of the Trump Campaign. Earlier this week, it was announced that he has been appointed as Chief Strategist in the Trump White House.

These guys simply retooled the old white supremacist and white robe movement into a white nationalist movement and replaced the white robe with a suit and tie while at the same time providing the outlet for exposure for those old line white supremacists like the KKK, Daily Stormer, League of the South and others.

They are also influenced and learning from the far right nationalists and anti-Semitic/anti-immigrant movements that have swept through Europe over the last few years.

But make no mistake, their self-identified goal is promoting white identity politics and policies ( We the Vanguard Now) and below the surface, the alt-right movement is racist, anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant.

With Steve Bannon, they now have a highly placed advocate in the White House and with Breitbart News, an outlet to continue to spread and expand their ideological intolerance.

And that is very disturbing .

Mate the only people I've seen spreading ideological intolerance this election are the people literally beating people bloody, starting riots, and calling everyone not 100% in lock-step agreement with them subhuman "deplorables" and white supremacists as bad as Hitler himself.

Breitbart's staff include non-whites and multiple jews, including an orthodox jew. Alan Fucking Dershowitz is calling bullshit on this, as is Ben Shapiro.

If you want to see what real fascism and ideological intolerance actually looks like you need look no further than the Clinton Campaign and the endless, practically routine and casual mass mob violence it's spawned. Look at women being egged in the face, homeless black women attacked in the streets, men stripped of clothes and beaten until they're bleeding and hospitalized.

That's fascism. And it's coming from people that are actually anti-semitic and actually openly support the eradication of the Jewish state as well as openly supporting genocidal terrorist organizations.

This election has felt like living in the twilight zone as I, a further-left-than-bernie voter, have had to constantly call bullshit on left-wing people who are anti-semitic accusing right-wing people who aren't of anti-semitism.

You made the statement, "I simply refuse to believe them until someone openly and explicitly self-identifies as one." and I provided information on who "openly and explicitly self-identified as alt-right.

Richard Spencer of the National Policy Institute and alternativeright.com and Jared Taylor of American Renaissance are two such individuals and leaders of the alt-right/white nationalist movement.

In September, they held a press conference in Washington, D.C :

As to Ben Shapiro, he resigned from Breitbart in part because of Steve Bannon's taking the news site in a far different direction than founder Andrew Breitbart.

    And as to:
You are grossly exaggerating the facts as to the Clinton campaign while ignoring the actions of many of Trump followers who, since the election, have become even more aggressive in verbally and physically threatening non-Trump supporters, most notably Jews, (particularly Jewish reporters) Blacks, Latinos and Muslims.

I can provide dozens of examples if you like. You can start here: Countess Acts of Hate Have Been Carried Out Since Trump's Win. While not violent, for the most part, these are still very disturbing.

These alt-right guys are on a mission. Steve Bannon may not be as vocal as the alt-right leaders in his racism and anti-Semitism in that he describes himself more in terms of being anti-globalism, but he is more than willing to provide an outlet for their message and Trump has appointed Bannon to a White House position that allows him to do so.

I linked to an article by Richard Spencer, We the Vanguard Now.

And this from League of the South and the warning about "globalist-progressive coalition of Jews, minorities, and anti-white whites" and "we need tight organization and numbers to help drive a stake through Dracula’s heart and keep him from rising once again to menace our people and civilization. No mercy should be shown to the enemies of our God, our Folk, and our civilization."

And A Normie's Guide to the Alt-Right by Andrew Anglin, at The Daily Stormer, "... The core concept of the movement, upon which all else is based, is that Whites are undergoing an extermination, via mass immigration into White countries which was enabled by a corrosive liberal ideology of White self-hatred, and that the Jews are at the center of this agenda..."

Read these articles and we can discuss them further if you like.

More on the anti-Semitism of alt-right Trump supporters:

While journalists expect to be criticized and even harassed by readers with dissenting opinions, it has reached a new level against Jewish reporters.

    From the Anti-Defamation League:

Yes, it includes the same Ben Shapiro you cited in defense of your "calling bullshit" on this.

    Ben Shapiro: Trump's Anti-Semitic Supporters.

While I don't put much weight on a Zionist conspiracy, I don't think it's all that surprising that so many people have such an impression. Especially given the lobbying power of AIPAC and this culture in the US political landscape that if a politician makes anything but pro-Israel statements in public they are basically committing career suicide, or at least guaranteeing themselves to have very little influence moving forward. You don't think this staunch and horribly unfounded pro-Israel pressure has anything to do with people's perception of a "Jewish elite"?

See, this right here is the problem with the left's approach to persuading people, and likely a strong contributing factor as to why Clinton lost.

Statements of this nature and just the incredibly condescending assumption of "getting their priorities straight" are highly counter-productive. I realize shaming is a favourite social tool for left-minded groups, which is weird because while it may pressure some people into aligning themselves with your position, it far and away alienates most others away from it.

Out of the myriad of national issues that exist, as an individual I can choose freely which one is more important to me than Gay Marriage.

It would be entirely valid to do so, and it certainly doesn't indicate a person's agreement with racism, homophobia, misogyny, sexual abuse and civil rights violations.

I can't tell you how massively immature the image comes across.

Call me a cynic (and a former lobbyist), but I suspect this will be no more effective than Obama's two year ban. The loopholes will be huge, particularly given than many folks who "lobby" are not registered lobbyist and thus would be exempt from a Trump executive order. But it does add to Trump's image of a populist outsider.

    Consider this:
What is needed is comprehensive lobbying reform and that would take an act of Congress to significantly strengthen the Lobbying Disclosure Act that presently regulates lobbying of federal agencies and Congress.

As the father of a gay daughter I have to say that this isn't a 'left' issue for me.
It's a human rights issue that matters to me in a way that is hard to describe without sounding maudlin or hyperbolic.
    Is it a 'major' issue?
    Maybe not.
But it is one that made me feel glad to be an American and incredibly frustrated that we face the possibility of it being taken away.

But if you don't like that one, try this one.

You know perfectly well that I meant someone openly and explicitly self-identifying as a white supremacist, and you also know perfectly well that it's the height of hypocrisy for you to treat "alt-right" as if it were synonymous with "white supremacist" because of the worst possible thing you can find on the depths of the internet while simultaneously insisting that it's completely unreasonable to hold feminists to what they routinely do in the real world.

It's this kind of "rules for thee but not for me" hypocrisy endemic to the regressive left that cost the democrats the election.

Merely listing things which have provably happened is "grossly exaggerating" but citing tweets and blogposts with no evidence whatsoever and incidents that are proven to be hoaxes as usual is somehow the gospel truth.

You want to know who threatens jews? the left. Time and time again the police have to rescue jewish students from violent socjus cultists. It's practically universal everywhere the poisonous ideology of social justice has spread,to the point female MP Ruth Smeeth needs police protection not from right wingers in the UK but from other Labour MP's.

Unlike the regressive left, which IS violent and has engaged in everything from beating people and hospitalizing them to dumping jars of piss on women's heads to drive by shootings. And that's even giving you all of these as real and not more hoaxes and false flags.

What part of everyone from uber-liberal Alan Dershowitz to the Orthodox Jew who worked with Bannon called bullshit on this do you not understand?

This kind of smear campaign, so obscene and unfactual that even pillars of the far left like Dershowitz are speaking out in defense of Bannon, is exactly the sort of thing that cost the left the election.

What you are doing right now is a hate crime. The only person engaging in hate here is you. You are committing a hate crime by spreading these lies even as Jew after Jew comes out to condemn them as part of a despicable media campaign.

Let me repeat that since you didn't get it the first time: You are the bad guy here.

It is the left which routinely not only denies Jewish ethnicity, calling them white europeans and even Khazars, not only denies their indigeneity to their native lands, but also accuses the Jews of every conspiracy theory you present here and then some. Jews control the government, the banks, the media. Jews murder babies and use their blood to make matza. Jews are european settler-colonialists. Jews are committing apartheit. Jews are committing genocide. Jews can't be trusted. Jews have dual loyalty.

And again this is not something pulled from the very deepest pits of the internet, or simply outright lies as Dershowitz and others have pointed out when it comes to Bannon, with the left it is mainstreamed and institutionalized to the very highest levels of some of the most prestigious political and academic elite.

Anti-semitism is a disease of the left, not the right. And it's a disease which will ultimately prove fatal as long as the left continues to utterly deny the depth and breadth of its sickness. How many more tens of thousands of Jews need to flee Europe before it's realised? How many more times must the police rescue Jewish students from a mob of violent feminists and social justice cultists?

You need to scrounge up tweets and hoaxes to try and stir up hatred and panic and continue to dehumanize everyone who didn't vote for Hillary. Meanwhile there is a wealth of hard evidence documenting the terrifying levels of mass mob violence carried out by leftists this election.

You need to cherry pick the most disagreeable thing you can find on the entire internet to hypocritically claim that "alt-right" automatically equals "white supremacist" and literally Hitler. Meanwhile anti-semitism from the left is so severe that even Members of Parliament need police protection from their own party and it's becoming routine to hear about the police rescuing Jews from yet another violent feminist/social justice mob.

Hell not that you'll believe me or that I intend to seriously rely on it but I attended a panel on domestic terrorism today and the FBI representative openly admitted the left was far more violent, far more dangerous, and the problem far more widespread on the left than the entire right. People on the right say shitty things on the internet or occasionally shout at people. People on the left actually engage in violence.

Do you know what happened shortly before the Pulse shooting? Local mosques invited a speaker to come and preach about the necessity of exterminating gays in the name of Allah. There was no protest, there was no opposition, and he was warmly received.

Then suddenly afterwards CAIR, a group recognized as a terrorist front even by arab countries, shows up to act like they're the real victims.

Then at a memorial OnlyBlackLivesMatter showed up to hijack the event and hurled verbal abuse at anyone who had a problem with that.

You clearly did not read the articles by the alt-right leaders (or the article by Ben Shapiro) or listen to the alt-right press conference and are selectively ignoring the facts.

Steve Bannon and the alt-right leaders like Spencer and Taylor have carefully crafted their agenda in terms of nationalists/populists vs what they call "global elitists" in an appeal to Trump's white working class base. Those "global elitist" by any other name are Jews, minorities/immigrants and any liberals who challenged their right wing agenda.

It is a message of WHITE nationalism and WHITE identity politics which is nothing more than putting a prettier face on white supremacy while attracting those like the KKK, League of the South, followers of The Daily Stormer and other white supremacists.

It is an American twist on the message of the extremist nationalists parties in Europe. It is a faux populist movement aimed at the anger of whites and their feeling of being ignored or persecuted by their respective governments.

And while the likes of Bannon, Spencers and Taylor dont encourage violence (they certainly dont condemn it), anyone who questions their motives or agenda is subject to verbal and physical threats by their most ardent supporters .

    We're done here.

You're right, we are done here. You're not willing to listen to even Alan Dershowitz, let alone the orthodox fucking jew that actually worked with Bannon. No amount of reality or facts can penetrate your fantasy.

You're insisting that you know better than them even while standing shoulder to shoulder with people who say in plain english the exact things you accuse Bannon et al of "hinting" at.

You're insisting that you are the last vanguard against fascism while standing shoulder to shoulder with people who firebomb campaign offices and form massive mobs to brutally beat and terrorize anyone voting for a different candidate.

You're spreading outright lies and smears written by people who are actually guilty of the things they project onto others.

Alan Dershowitz is one person with one opinion, as is one "orthodox fucking jew", while you clearly did not read the writings or listen to the press conference of the alt-right leaders.

Posting those writings and press conference is hardly "spreading lies" as you claim. Nor are the numerous examples of verbal attacks of Jewish journalists, including Ben Shapiro, who resigned from Breitbart.

That results in a complete lack of credibility on your part.

    Have a nice night.

I gave you an article by Ben Shapiro specifically about Trump and Bannon, which you clearly did not read. Just like you clearly did not read anything else I said as you continue to try to use "alt-right" and "white supremacist" as if they were interchangeable... something I reiterate is staggeringly hypocritical as you refuse to allow me or anyone else to hold feminism responsible for massive widespread mainstream real world actions let alone words.

Yknow what results in a complete lack of credibility? Ignoring the multiple minorities and Jews including (again) an Orthodox Jew who personally know or worked with Bannon in favor of criminally libelous hate speech from outlets with a proven history of flat out lying to push their agenda.

Please, by all means, continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with people actually openly accusing Jews of blood libel and worse, who openly support antisemitic violence and genocidal terrorist organizations, who openly engage in mass violence, who openly call for mass censorship and further violence, who openly do and say every single thing you claim to find unacceptable.
