Not sure why, but I signed for an account on there. May try to figure out what to do with it.

Twitter is like a "status only" version of Facebook. Kind of.

Twitter has always looked to me like a service to share text messages with the world - and I see now there is an option to make them private if you desire. Is part of the 'fun' expressing yourself in 140 characters or less?
edit: I just saw Justin Bieber on a "who to follow" list along with that Pauly D fellow and Kim Kardashian. Talk about the last three people I would choose.

I joined Twitter to follow one of my favorite bands. There's a handful of TFP folks and a couple others, but it doesn't hold interest for me.

Our current culture and society is one of an extremely short attention span. 140 characters is practically a hit and run. I get frustrated with our blog comments here cutting off at 600 characters, so trying to shorten that to something actually meaningful would drive me nuts. For me it feels like a form of censorship since I normally already quite brief.

I looked at the twitter screen for a minute or three and just thought "what text messages do I have to share with everyone?"
The most interesting aspect for me is the opportunity to get a brief glimpse of various famous/'celebrity' type of people and their thoughts. It was mildly amusing that Taylor Swift had to use Taylorswift13.
But I will probably crawl back into my cave and let the account go unused.

like any network-based thing, how interesting it is follows from the network you assemble. i think twitter is an interesting link dump/source mostly. i have some people who use it to either post about their lives or do a bit of self-branding (can't tell the difference really. is there one? when you post to facebook, aren't you also self-branding?) but i dont do that...increasingly i find that style of tweeting to be irritating. there are comics and "comics"---once in a while i like "i am capitalism"---who appears to be a cynical marxist type...then there are the writers/lit journals and musicians/record labels artists and academics that post what they're up to/new work, which is interesting. not always easy to locate new stuff, particular more underground work. so it can be interesting. but it's quite different from facebook. a parallel world.

I use Twitter pretty regularly and find it useful for keeping current with information and trends in activities that interest me. I especially like being able to group the people and accounts I follow into these lists:

    Local Folks
    Pro Athletes
Musicians & Performers (actors included here)
    Recommended: @AlecBaldwin, @nickofferman (Ron Swanson on Parks & Recreation); @rosannecash; @ConanOBrien; @ActuallyNPH (Neil Patrick Harris); @SarahKSilverman
    Local Info
    Recommended (for DC-area folks): @capitalweather; @drgridlock; @MDSHA (Maryland State Highway Administration); @mtamaryland
    Friends
    Blogs, News Organizations & Information
    Recommended: @BreakingNews; @TheOnion; @Campmor
    Random Celebrities
    Recommended: @billmaher; @SuzeOrmanShow
    Politicos (note: considerably left-leaning)
    Recommended: @KeithOlbermann; @algore; @maddow; @markos
    Design & Media Types
    Cycling

No. I have a Facebook account, but I'm more the type of person who checks it once a day and thats it for the day. Personally I have no use for twitter.

I just don't get it personally. I actually sat for a bit and tried to think what text message length message I would share and all I could think of something advertising my websites.
But it did not strike me as 'effective advertising' and I really do not care how much traffic I get. People are interested in what I offer or they are not; I definitely am targeting a niche crowd as someone said in one of my blog comments once.
    ---
I still have my facebook page and check it at sporadic intervals, but have not posted anything on there in nearly two months now. Goes back to " does not strike me as 'effective advertising' " and I do not feel the need to know every little thing my family/cousins/whoever else on the friend list feels compelled to post.

I tweet. If you're interested in reading about local food, food in general, craft beer, and wine, that's largely what I tweet about. My handle reveals where I live, so if you'd like it, shoot me a PM. I'd be happy to follow you back.

I actually really enjoy using Twitter. I mostly follow breweries around Oregon, local pubs, restaurants, chefs, and anything related to my favorite sports teams.

    Yes.
    I tweet and I retweet.
I wish I were as organized as @DamnitAll with the grouping of subjects, but I'm not.

I use Twitter to help me keep abreast of breaking news related to subjects I write about (mostly pop culture) but I use it too to retweet some cause-related topics
(usually charity-oriented) that are in the now. That is one way how Twitter differs from Facebook.
For personal Tweets, and I hardly know anyone on Twitter, but for those I get the tweet sent as a text message to my phone.

If something moves me to tweet, something not uber-personal, like the recent death of Lou Reed, I'll tweet or in his case, retweet a good link to the story and add a short comment. That one got retweeted by a number of people.
For people who just cannot say it all in 140 characters there are free apps such as Twitlonger (sp) that allow you to finish your thought.

I hardly ever direct a tweet to a celebrity, meaning actually call them out like here at The TFP using for example, @suzyv for Suzanne Vega but I did after her recent Chicago show that I went to and she read it and responded. I thought that was cool of her and it does mean something to me that some famous people that I like or admire actually read their Twitter feed from fans.

I don't believe it is wise to "take to Twitter" to go on a rant. I figure it is kinda rude to your followers. What my followers can expect is regular reporting on episodes of (a handful of) TV shows and some films, some retweeting from the people involved in those projects (Norman Reedus, Emmy Rossum) and/or from actors I fangirl over (Katee Sackhoff, Tricia Helfer). I also sometimes tweet an Instagram photo. I've really just started with that so not much going on yet. I tried to resist Instagram due to their dodgy privacy policies, but I couldn't.

I don't care about online privacy, meaning if you want to stalk me, go for it. My bank, credit card stuff is a different ballgame but the point of me being online is to get work online so there is no separating me from the work I do.
My paid writing work is not glamourous. Right now, I have a Jack-in-the Box ad to write.

My Twitter "handle" is in the link at the bottom of each post I write here: @cyn_mccrackan .

I keep meaning to use Twitter more, but every time I try to get into it I feel like an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about.

  17. I have one, and use it every once in a while. In spurts.

Twitter handle is the same as my TFP username. In case anyone is interested.

Just keep hashtagging to 3 at the maximum, and you'll be fine.

    Agreed!

Don't over hash tag as it will eat up your 140 characters!

I'm still not quite sure how to integrate Tumblr tags with Facebook (which I don't believe deserves another thread but is relevant) because I use the Tumblr hashtags from the person I am "borrowing" and there are bunches but no character limit to speak of on FB. So sorry FB peeps, but the Tumblr recipe blog I just started following looks so yum!
