Dexter (Use spoiler tags for anything that hasn't aired yet)

  1. We're going to edit the rules a bit to not be schnockered. The Deb swearing bit is what will end us.

It's taken 6 years but the Deb swearing thing has finally rubbed off on me. She use to say 'Fuck me sideways,' quite often and I find myself saying it (to myself) but I can't get the intonation just right so I probably won't ever actually utter the phrase.

I so loved season 1 Dexter and I'm totally due for a rewatch. Enjoy!

The thing that has sort of ruined Dexter for me is that you can clearly see that as long as it is popular the writers won't do anything daring. First 4 seasons has some pretty major changes in characters and stories. Major characters were never safe, etc.
Right now, you just know Deb won't find out, Dexter won't go nuts, etc. Best example is the episode with his imaginary brother. They had plenty of chances to take dexter somewhere. Either darker, or caught, or something. And it ends the exact same way it started.

True. The writers are exploring dexter based on simpler questions like faith, fatherhood, normal life, etc.

I agree that it was more edgy when there was more risk. Now that they signed on for 2 more seasons we know that at least one season will be pretty tame since it has to either at or allow for one more season.

The last episode was so painfully bad that I'm actually not looking forward to watching this show anymore. Horrible, lazy, uninteresting, predictable, boring, totally lame villains and just really annoying.

I concur. Dexter has been one of my favorite shows through the years and now it's torture to watch as the writers/producers have made the actual show the primary target for death.

It's in the way they're getting Dexter and other characters to do things that don't make sense or support a storyline. Heavy efforts to reform Dexter to a moral character just aren't going to work either. He's a serial killer and always will be. Endless mentions of the "dark passenger" are now getting laughs from me as are his somber voice-overs as he explains his thoughts. And while it's amusing that every cop around Dexter can't solve a crime or figure out what's going on, for us viewers it's a bit tedious.

Renewed for two more seasons? I hope they get some new writers.

It was pretty terrible and predictable, but I feel like the writers have finally become self-aware and are pushing us to see how much of their stupid shit we'll put up with. Nobody watches this show for the writing, we watch in spite of it.

So to be more specific, the DEXTER writers are lame so we watch it for the character of Dexter as played by Michael C. Hall? That would be, in most part, why I do.

I finally bought Season 2 on DVD this morning so I can get somewhat caught up. I left S2:E1 halfway through and Netflix dropped season 2 off the streaming list the next day.

From the perspective of having only seen Season 1 and knowing no more than very vague things like "John Lithgow shows up at some point" and something involving the FBI in season 2 ( back of the DVD box) I sincerely hope this series ends with a "bang" of some sort. Not saying it has to be completely dark and depressing but the less "happy ending/happily ever after" the better in my opinion.
Something like the idea of the series finale of Forever Knight where nearly every major human character you have gotten to know dies in the last few episodes and and several of the vampires as well.

Yep. As soon as Michael C. Hall, after holding out for heaven knows how much more $, signed on for 2 more years the wheels which were already poised to go into motion--went.
I'm a bit disappointed. I love the show and like many, I see it losing momentum. I think one more season would have been just fine. Then Hall could get back to what he's missed: singing and dancing.

    He's a singer and dancer?

This show has just gotten so bad...

What was the point of the "disciples?"

and really, the intern trying to run his idea of a serial killer game by someone who had his wife killed by one? I know what the writers were trying to do (setting up another one of those "if only you knew" moments"), but that is simply sloppy. It is something too incredulous even for a series like dexter.

Yep. Best known perhaps as the emcee in Cabaret (on-stage).
After ten years of making cable TV (Six Feet Under directly into Dexter) Hall wants to get back into theater.

Huh, had no idea. I'd guess I'd prefer him burying and killing people to singing and dancing but then I've never see him do those things so?

I agree the writing has gotten bad, guess it's just hard to keep a story line like this going for so long. I mean seriously a serial killer working for the police and running around Miami offing people right under his co-workers noses almost always just barely, BARELY escaping detection. Plot repeats itself over and over again every season... for six seasons now.

As MSD pointed out a lot of us still watch it in spite of the writing rather then for it. But at this point I'm not sure I'll be able to stick with it for two more seasons. Probably will just to see what happens. Well, that and I actually live a pretty boring life. But honestly some of the Mexican soap operas here, which are notoriously awful, have more believable plots at this point. Kind of sad to think it's going to go out with such and whimper.

I wonder what the numbers are for it this year? I can usually tell when a shows ratings begin to flat line, the show doesn't get posted, or at least not as quickly, on the on-line streaming sites I use to watch much of my TV. For example with I got home last night, around mid-night, Homeland and Empire Boardwalk were already available for download. Dexter didn't show up on the sites I check until this morning around 0500. Last week it was a no show until nearly noon on Monday.

I had about forgotten about Forever Knight. That was one of my favorite shows way back when..... The ending was great

I get where you are coming from but 'shhh' on the 'boring life' part! Maybe for the only time in recent history it is actually cool to watch television because sadly, most films made these days suck!

I get the Mexican soap opera comparison too, and ouch, that really hurts!

Methinks now that M.C. Hall has locked in his last 2 years he may have more to say about how he wants Dexter to 'end.'
He's had a decent involvement in shaping the character as one would expect--who knows him better? I'd like to see everyone involved in Dexter make sure that the show's last season is as mind-blowing as it should be. That may involve yet again replacing the showrunner(s). Next season will be the set-up with Dexter getting closer to the moment of being found out (which as you noted, all these years would have been if things were at all realistic) and the last season can be a mind-blowing good time with none of us knowing what Dexter's fate will be other that finally, Dexter will have a fate.

I thought as big-time reviewer for EW was saying the other day, that Jennifer Carpenter as Deb has been particularity good this season. She IMO, will be the key to the 'end' of Dexter if that is to be.

I am really interested in seeing where Dexter ends. I'd like it to not end with the possibility of a feature film.

not a Dexter spoiler, but more a The Shield
While it was a different end, Vic Mackey of The Shield being absolved of all his crimes and being confined to a desk job was his own personal hell as an ending. It was a satisfying ending once you understood that it would be hell for him as he was completely neutered in all definitions of the word.

That is just one thing that I liked about the Forever Knight ending. There was no possible way to even think of a feature film with the 'regular cast' body count piling up in the last 2-3 episodes.

And speaking of the Shield I have seen perhaps five minutes of that show. Sounded interesting, and perhaps I should check it out starting from season 1.
