I like the article, Cyn. It's good to have the numbers out in the open.

I'd like to think that my reality is less expensive than the scenario outlined above, but in reality my reproductive health costs a lot more. That's because I have Endometriosis. Rather than midol for my pain, I tend to need something more substantial, and occasionally require a prescribed narcotic like vicodin. This tends to get pricey. Oh, and I have a lot of pain at ovulation, too, so that's twice month being indisposed to "girly issues". It really messes with the work schedule.

My husband was speculating on how much I spend on my hair over the course of a year as I went to get a haircut on Saturday. He estimated about $300. I said, sure, that sounds good. It's probably a little upwards of that; my hair type means I often buy a product but it doesn't have the level of control I'm looking for, and it ends up in my product graveyard. I'm also fortunate that I live in a town where haircuts are not ridiculously expensive, even at the better salons.

I'm thankful I have the Mirena IUD; it means that I don't get a period anymore, and so I don't have to deal with those expenses. I didn't pay anything for it, but even if I had, it is still cheaper over time than monthly birth control and expenses related to having a period.

Eh, it's easy to get sidetracked talking about hairdos and cosmetics. These are things that women do for other women and potentially to fit in with a particular type of office job. As with men that shave their heads and use only liquid prison soap, there are plenty of women that don't do the fancy haircuts/makeup thing. Pretty obvious that "Ye Olde Social Norms" have been set up to encourage women to spend more time/money on their looks.

I disagree, at least as far as my own reasoning goes. I do it for myself. I like it when my hair looks nice. I struggled for years to figure out what worked for my hair (it's thick, coarse, some it is curly, some of it isn't), and it is nice to have it look so great now. I used to look like Alice from Dilbert, and it was the primary thing that got me teased in middle school. If I did the "I don't care" thing, I am the one who would feel gross.

Why do guys do that, add the cost of hair cuts. I have really curly hair, so it's best to keep it long. For all the other stuff, $$$

It can get really expensive, I wonder how my Dad managed being a single parent raising 6 girls and 1 boy for about 5 years before he remarried.

This is similar to my situation. I put electric clippers (number 0) to my head at least once a week and use a basic liquid cleanser on my head/face and bar soap on the rest. This compared to my SO, who has long naturally curly hair that she likes to dye. I've lost count of the number of bottles that take up space in our bathroom.

Here's one. Not that I would be able to resist their power.

I can retire at 35 because of it. ;) Add in how cheap cutting my own hair is, hotels give me free soap and shampoo, and how cheap a healthy penis is...

I'm with Snowy on this one.

When it comes down to it, you want to feel your best as you face your day. Looking at myself in the mirror and thinking "I'm beautiful" is a critical part of my morning. If I don't have time to bathe and brush my hair - even if no one else notices -I know and it bothers me.

Throughout my adult live, I have carefully trimmed my spending habits and figured out to the last penny just how little I could live comfortably on each month. When we got married, I warned my husband "I can live on no less than $xxx a month." He was shocked that it would cost so much for basics. And when I say basics, I mean it. I use the cheapest of everything I can. I cut my own hair, shave with the cheapest single-blade razors I can find, pluck my own eyebrows, use inexpensive lotion, shampoo, etc. Taste and fashion aside, women are flat-out more expensive than men.

I use d to say that women take longer to get ready because they had to put on make up and twice as much underwear.

skogafoss uses birth control pills so her period is like once a quarter. She much prefers it that way. I have no idea how much she spends on anything else as she uses my razors and doesn't buy much for pads. I can say she does get yeast infections from time to time and she spends extra for antibiotics, probiotic yogurt, cranberry juice, etc.

Well, since your parts are external you probably don't know you could have a yeast infection. Adjust much sometimes?

Since our parts are internal AND there are 3 bodily orifices within close proximity of each other(ever heard of a nasal infection in only one nostril? I s'pose it could happen, but I digress)-- I'm talking inches, proper wiping technique cannot be stressed enough. Women get UTI's more frequently than men do, and the probability of getting a yeast infection, which occurs inside our bodies, (so 'adjustment' just doesn't cut it) is higher. I'm not sure how you could find this funny, since you could be the one giving your woman the itches.
Yes, women can have yeast infections quite regularly. If it happens too frequently, both partners have to take the anti-fungal medication.

I'll go out on a limb here and say this for most guys, we aren't interested in owning one. We'll even help cover the costs you incur due to having one. All we ask for is visitation rights a few times a week. ;)

You think owning one is expensive? Try renting one by the hour...

  20. for us males that are cut.. we should also remmeber to factor that in as a 'one-off' cost over the males life cycle.

i could also come up with a whole heap of stuff that are purely a male related costs..

jock itch, fleshlights, facial hair removal, being married to a shopaholic woman... that's probably the biggest cost!
