So this got done. I have Windows 7!

But now I can't get it to install the drivers on my Wireless USB (D-Link DWA-125) [ethernet is fried, which is why I have it]. The installation program says it can't find the adapter, and Windows says it can't find the drivers. Both of them are idiots.

Ubuntu set up this shit without even asking me.

So, yeah, I have no Internet connection.

[EDIT: Never mind. I figured it out. Goddamn, Windows is still so convoluted.]

    I just saw this...and I know it's been coming...HTTP/2
Why your web surfing will get faster within weeks

Now, this is not to address the new protocol, which will likely improve internet usage,
but...the question is, will there need to be Browser, OS and even HW changes...patches and upgrades, etc. to fully leverage this??

I suspect so...nothing in computers is a solution onto itself...but more often, you have to build and write distinctly for it, to leverage this fully.
I've seen it for most every change I've seen in the past. (64-bit, multi-core, multithreading, newer versions of HTML, etc and so on...)

It's not magic, computers need to be told directly how to work with things. (and usually, if it's "already there" means that you're using something underlying that already written for it)

    What do you think?

Not much info in the article, but it sounds like a coding thing on websites mainly. That, and browsers figuring out how to render old and new code.

This from the link in the article:

Moores law might still be working, but the usefulness of improvements in chip technology haven’t kept pace with the 1990 to 2010 generation. I bought my previous desktop in 2012, and through upgrades, managed to keep it running reasonably well until last year.

2024 brought a full-on tech refresh at Casa de Joelski. My phone, a Galaxy S21 ultra split its case from battery swelling; a thing with Lithium Ion battery tech, so that begat an Ultra 24. Next my HP lappy from 2014 finally succumbed to heat issues. I don’t consider a decade of everyday use for work and personal use a failure. BTW, I prefer HP for industry standard architecture, making the, the most upgradeable PC’s available, and I always buy refurbished from Woot.com. You essentially get a factory renewers computer for an average grand less than retail.

Finally my desktop started having Nagy issues, the way a car nickel and dimes you when it’s time to say goodbye. I again went with woot and got HP Omen computers (why is it that get the better specs, you have to get a gaming computer?) I scored an Omen 17” i7, 1TB, 32 Gb lappy with nVidia RTX 4060, and a 30L desktop with Core i7, 1 TB WD Black nvme HD, 32 GB DDR5, and RTX4070 graphics. No proprietary, or OEM crap stuff. I might have fixed my desktop, but it was too old to have the security chip necessary to install Windows 11, and 10 is being EOL’d later in the year. Also got a 10th edition iPad, rounding out the hit for 2024. At least it’s all paid-for, so hopefully, these will last a while!

Edit: Want to replace my dated, crumbling hutch desk with a sit/stand model. Got some shopping to do!
