I had one last month. I'm in my early 30's, do a ton of exercise, high fiber diet, in excellent health. However due to a family history of colon cancer my doctor recommended I get one at an early age.

    They found 4 polyps.

Thankfully the lab tests showed none of them were cancerous, but at my age I should have zero polyps. I'll be having another one in 2 years.

It's very important everyone get a colonoscopy at the appropriate time.

More emphasis on doing this if you're 50+ (I think that's what they recommend) or if you're younger, as soon as you have any inkling you might have something going on down there. I was diagnosed when I was 46, when an antibiotic I was prescribed irritated my bowels to the point of bleeding. One colonoscopy later, I was diagnosed with stage 3C colon cancer. Had it resected and did chemo for 6 months, and so far cancer-free over 1 yr later. Srsly, do it.

I didn't have much problem with the bevvy.... just pinch your nose if it's yucky, and chase with water. I had orange, and had to drink a gallon or so of it.

I got a physical a few months ago and I forgot to ask my doctor about it, so I'm going to next time I'm in. I've got almost two years until 30, but the risk factor in my family is elevated as per my previous post in this thread. He'll probably tell me I don't need it yet at first, but if I mention the risk factors and my concern, he'll send me for the test and argue it out with insurance if they try to say it's not medically necessary.

My wifes grandma is having one in the morning at 9. Any ideas how long it takes if all goes smooth?

  5. The procedure is only about 20 minutes long. Prep and recovery from the sedation take a lot longer. From the time I entered the hospital until I walked out, it was over 3 hours. The rest of the day is pretty much spent shaking off the sedation. Nap time.

Ugh, I just got a callback from my doctor's office. I have an abnormal Hb reading (hemoglobin). Since I've informed him of some symptoms of hemorrhoids in the past, he's scheduling me an appointment for a gastroenterologist, which I assume will mean a colonoscopy.

Of course, my overactive imagination immediately gravitates to colon cancer. (Worrying runs in my family.) Though honestly, there are many other things it could be based on other possible symptoms. It could be simply hemorrhoids (the symptoms only come on occasion though). It could be a slow onset of IBD or IBS (also, my nephew has Crohn's). It could be stress-related (again with the worrying).

My recent eight months of veganism tied into my love of coffee and tea (which hinder iron absorption) could also be a contributing factor. Non-heme iron is low on the absorption scale as it is.

I know I have a very low risk for colon cancer, based on age (36), lifestyle factors (fairly good diet, good weight, adequate exercise, no smoking, no drinking), and a lack of family history of that specific cancer, but I still can't get it out of my mind. The stress will only make this worse. I just want answers. Stick that fucking camera in me.

I have an appointment with my doc on October 13. I'm still waiting to hear back about my appointment with the gastroenterologist.

I hope this won't ruin my vacation. Though I think taking a vacation is also good timing. I need the distraction.

For Americans ... I heard that Moviprep doesn't taste so bad and it cleans you out real good. Also, if you live in the US, you get $20 back via mail in rebate. The mail in rebate form needs to be obtained from your doctors office and if you don't have it, call the help line of Salix Pharmaceuticals and they'll give you up to $20 back.

Mail in rebates for colon cleansers.

    Colonic addict heaven.

With so many reasons for an abnormal Hb reading, what has put your doctor onto a gastrointestinal cause? I'm guessing the reading was on the low side signifying some bleeding (if you're a worrier, an ulcer isn't out of the question) but as you don't say whether it was high or low, I'm not sure.

I'm also guessing it's on the low side. I was talking with the receptionist, so I didn't bother asking for details then. I will find out more at my appointment with my GP on October 13. As I mentioned above, I have told him about some GI complaints in the past that seemed to be hemorrhoids. The symptoms would happen only occasionally and would come and go pretty quickly.

It could be an ulcer, yes. It could maybe be some kind of IBD. It could be something worse. The only way to find out is to take a look.

Well, as it happens, my Hb is back to normal.

However, about the other symptoms, the GI doctor said there's a very good chance it's not anything serious. He gave me the option of doing the colonoscopy anyway if I wasn't a gambling man.

As it happens, I'm not, especially when it comes to my health. He said the colonoscopy could rule out a few things and will give me peace of mind until I'm 50.

    I go in Thursday.

  12. Nothing to it. You'll wake up saying "When are you gonna start." There is the fun of the night before, though. Holloween will be a real treat ;)

They say "just stay close to the bathroom", haha. More like don't leave the pot for 4 hours. Just about the time you loose feelin in your legs and feet.
Then you fall off the pot crawling to sip the last bit of that jungle juice. Oh yeah you will be fine.
But really it's good to make sure you are in tip top shape!

My mom had one done a couple of months ago, and they gave her propofol to sedate her. She said she doesn't remember a thing.

DAKA DOING VERY NICELY, THANK YOU

Yep, definitely will say "when will you start"
But the prep, the bowl will be your best friend, and if you can't drink the 45 gallons of "stuff" don''t worry, that's mostly so the Dr. doesn't have to deal with the mess... and afterwards you'll feel thanks god, a few years off...........

  16. I went through an entire roll of toilet paper that night. No shit! Well, that isn't exactly the right thing to say, is it?

You'll be fine. Good that you're getting it done.

My worst colonoscopy experience -- I lived a two hour drive away from the hospital where the colonoscopy was being done. Followed the prep instructions, and then had a very uncomfortable car ride.

I've been through more of these things than you can shake a stick at. It's a bit uncomfortable, I'm not going to lie, but honestly the prep is the worst part. They'll put an IV in before the procedure and give you a nice sedative. You'll either sleep through it entirely, or else you'll simply not have a care in the world.

Good luck sir, and I wholeheartedly support your decision to not take chances. When it comes to your health, it's simply not worth it.

:D:D It's funny, when I was on the table before they put me out, I saw the Dr dipping some kind of tube in dark blue solution. He was dressed in all black, and I remember telling him
that he looked like John Cash, except he was 50 pounds heavier then him. I blame it on the drugs they pumped into me. Glad I don't remember anything.

I just picked up 2 gallons of various juice from the grocery store: two kinds of apple, white cranberry, white grape.

The Klean-Prep and Dulcolax are staring at me in the face.

I'm totally ready to do this.
