Although it wasn't quite cool enough, I rationalized it by saying it's October...I had a hot apple cider with spiced rum (Sailor Jerry) today. I prefer spiced rum over bourbon in a cider as I don't like to ruin the bourbon. I'd rather drink it neat. I almost ordered a second at the bar because it tasted so yummy.

The only white sausages in Germany are "Bratwurst" and "Weißwurst". Weißwurst is a pretty thick sausage and its taste is an acquired one, if you know what they're made of.

Bratwurst isn't exactly a very thin sausage, but it's much thinner than Weißwurst and, depending on who made it, can be pretty thin. Bratwurst looks white-ish before it's put on the grill. Weißwurst is boiled only.

With the little cold snap we've been having here in DC I have been craving a nice big bowl of chili. I wish I got my act together earlier this weekend to make a batch.

I just laughed wine out of nose. And then read it aloud, just for emphasis.
It totally rocked harder than Battlefield 3.

I'm so craving good Cabernets now... in the summer and at hotter times, I love pinot noirs. But this Sobon Estate 2008 Cab is awesome. Next on my list is the Corvallis Wine Company's Cab... or Pinot, since it's going to be 90* again later this week. For some reason, colder weather makes me crave heartier wines.

I'm really curious about this wine that carries my city's name but I've never heard of it...As far as I know, there is no actual Corvallis Wine Co. in Corvallis, so it makes me wonder where it's actually produced and who is producing it.

The cold months for me means low and slow cooking. Something braised like some lamb shanks or short ribs in a thick reduced gravy with mashed potatoes. Total comfort food.

Cold weather definitely has its foods...
We've entered the wet season here in Seattle (should be better again in.. July I guess), so I made a lentil soup the other day:

Definitely good on a cold day.

I'm also resuscitating my yeast culture (which spent several months in the fridge) and should make some sourdough bread next weekend.

And by the time it gets darker on my return commute (November), I know it will be time for mulled wine :)

This all helps in dealing with winter, for sure..

Dad's six-ingredient New Mexico style chile. Coarse ground or chopped meat, (ideally pork, but beef or bison is OK) sliced fresh chile peppers, (mix mild Anaheims and hotter peppers to taste) onions, cumin, Mexican oregano, garlic.
That's it. And New Mexico chile is always mostly green in color.
Adding tomatoes and/or beans would turn it red, and make it Texas style chili.
    Which ends with an "i."
New Mex chile always ends with an "e."

Irish oatmeal. I keep my carb consumption under pretty tight control, but I loosen up for steel cut Irish in the winter. And no, Quaker (or any instant oatmeal -yuck) won't do.

How could I forget collards? A big, slow-cooked pot of greens, black-eyed peas and rice topped with fresh tomatoes and onion... I just found a HUGE bunch of greens at the Market for $3. Topped loosianna peppered vinegar... Yum!

Thread necro! (My original post focused on autumn weather, but since the title is a bit more ambiguous, and I've been thinking about the upcoming holidays...)

As we're getting closer to Christmas, I've been craving those little mini sausages slow cooked in barbecue sauce. I haven't eaten them in...sheesh...six years? But one of my great-aunts made them for all the winter gatherings...that side of the family always did an extended reunion in between Christmas and New Year, and they're reviving the tradition this year. Which is probably why I've been thinking about them, to be honest.

Bread pudding is also something I normally only think about when it turns colder. That sounds pretty awesome right now, too.

I've been craving spicy: Indian cuisine lately. I had a few samosas recently, but I need more. I might have to make a batch of extra spicy chana masala or something.
