Food Coffee

    I drink black coffee. I used to not really care where it came from or who made it, but I'm starting to find that my tastes are getting a bit more particular these days. I don't know if that's because I've gotten older and more discerning, or if it's because I work in a hipster neighbourhood and I've been exposed to all of the different boutique cafes. Either way, I find that I can tolerate Tim Horton's but don't enjoy it all that much, and instant coffee is utterly undrinkable. I'm not quite to the point of grinding my own beans yet, though.

    Depending on what beans you buy & where you buy them, grinding your own isn't much more $ than preground. The 40 OZ bag of Daily Chef whole beans is only slightly more expensive per serving than Folger's Black Silk.

    My wife told me that she heard a news report saying that coffee prices will be going up becaue of a coffee fungus outbreak in South America.

    On another forum a member mentioned green coffee beans being really cheap. I've never looked into the prices. True?
    I did come with an interesting idea as to how to roast beans.

    As (if) the supply diminishes, most likely prices across the board will rise. Or maybe not.
    Maybe I should just stock up on plenty of cat shit coffee beans.

    I drink direct trade or fair trade coffee most of the time, so I don't know how it will change the prices of the kind of coffee I drink. I'm already paying more for coffee.

    Looking up info on this coffee fungus, it looks as if it's a problem in the coffee-producing areas of Central America. http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424127887324031404578483110298925712 That is really unfortunate. Central America produces some really delicious, complex coffee, usually on the sweeter side with notes of citrus and chocolate. I don't usually drink Central American coffee, though. I used to drink a lot of it before I branched out into African and Indonesian coffees. I would say my preferences now trend towards unique African coffees and Indonesian coffees, especially those from Bali or Sumatra.

    It sounds as if coffee companies will be able to make up for the loss of Central American beans in some ways, but it does have an impact on single-origins, which is a bummer.

    Generally, I enjoy a medium roast. Never had a blonde, and I just cannot get past the burnt flavour I perceive in dark & French roasts.
    I do enjoy whole bean; means I can grind it more coarsely for my percolator so don't have to strain it through my teeth when I drink.
    Right now, I'm working through dis can I got for Chrstmas.
    After it's gone, I'll see what tickles my fancy at Earth Fare.

    I have had one or two sips of coffee in the past twenty years. Tasted bloody awful. One of those times was one those frozen concoctions/slushie things with coffe as the liquid and the flavour of the coffee was enough for one taste to be too much for me. Must be an acquired taste.
    I was marveling at the horrific prices Starbucks charges earlier today when I assisted a client with buying a 16 oz Mocha. Came out to 26.5 cents per OUNCE with tax.

    All "local" coffee in Singapore is roasted with butter or ghee (ghee is just clarified butter).

    They brew the coffee in pots that look like this:

    They use a coffee "sock" to filter the finely ground coffee:

    They then pour it between vessels to further filter the grounds:

    You can have the Kopi in a number of ways, but the normal is with sweetened condensed milk. Consumed black, it's thicker than drip coffee with a different, more silky (?) mouthfeel.

    Just as a side note, I found a wonderful ice cream parlor in Port Townsend Washington that makes espresso floats.
    Two shots of espresso, and a nice big scoop of homemade ice cream (I had Double Dark Chocolate), topped with fresh whipped cream.
    Needless to say, I've found a new favorite place.

    Sounds like a variation on Bulletproof Coffee. I usually make mine with heavy cream and coconut oil. Makes a great I-don't-know-when-I'm-going-to-eat-breakfast breakfast.

    I'm drinking a medium roast locally produced blend. It's very good. It's $15 / pound. That's pretty fucking decadent.

    I find myself eyeing grinders.

    I don't even know who I am anymore.

    If you're going to go for a grinder, go big or go home, meaning shell out and buy a burr grinder. It makes a much more regular, consistent grind. Out of readily available burr grinders, I recommend Capresso over Cuisinart--my cheap-o Capresso from Costco is four years old; my Cuisinart died after one, and they wouldn't respond to my warranty requests.

    If you do get a blade grinder, Braun makes a nice one.
