Obama should have had a provision in the bill calling it ReaganCare and it would have had widespread Republican support.

I can't remember what grade in school we learned that the State of the Union speech is where the president offers up his agenda and budget for what he'd like to see done, then Congressional subcommittees, committees, and full floor votes (IF it the bill gets that far) and each step there is supposed compromise (this is where the lobbyists buy votes and amendments). The problems we have had for too long is, we can have a bill start out X dollars for all healthcare (medicaid/medicare/etc) and have amendments tacked on (pork) stating that in this bill we give HUGE tax cuts to big Pharms (Merck, Bristol Myers, whoever), from there the Houses debate and pass or send it back for rewrite. Then you put the president OR Congress in a sticky situation by having just enough of what the President wanted to for to sign the bill into law (or for Congress to pass it) and the amendments make the original part of the bill weaker and more of an amendment to itself. That's how we end up with "bridges to nowhere", and so on.

What Reagan wanted to do, and it was a good idea IN the right hands and for the right reasons, was have a line item veto so that lobbyists couldn't tack on BS like that. Reagan had good vision in that aspect, but by that time lobbyists controlled everything and the states. It had to be an amendment to the Constitution and had quite a bit of popular support until the press started to talk about how evil it was and how much power it gave the President.
