    I debated about doing this at all, but what the hell. If you prefer something more like a CV, perhaps you'll settle for selection of textbooks from my coursework:

    The duct tape binding is 'Organic Chemistry', The black in the center is 'Molecular Biology', the orange at right of center is 'Chemical Principles' and the A&P on the extreme right is merely a placeholder for the much more demanding 400 level physiology book that I no longer have.

    I went from four to six 24oz bottles of coke zero to zero cold turkey because it was making my stomach bloat and I felt overall really yuck. My stomach shrank and I was hungry like a normal person, not like all the damn time. I don't think it was acids or things but I'm glad I switched to iced green tea. I didn't have carbonated beverages until I was 23 or so... didnt like the bubbles. My teeth didn't change or anything.

    Lol, responsibly drinking soda.

    Anyways, phosphoric acid is what gives soda its zing when you start drinking it, I know this because I've tried fanta and then a thomas kemper orange cream soda, and the effect on my teeth was much less. I looked at the ingredients and there was no phosphoric acid, there was citric acid, which I know from chemistry class is a weaker acid than phosphoric acid.

    Update:

    Club Soda + flavor syrup

    = soda, sans acid;
    about the same overall cost as name brand soda;
    shortcuts around the expensive carbonation machines;
    your discretion whether to have sugar in it;
    included potassium content.

    I would be far more concerned about the sugar intake from carbonated drinks, than anything else.

  8. Exactly. And given the alternative, this isn't any better
    Study: Diet soda doesn't help you lose weight

    Seldom drink any sweetened carbonated drinks. Maybe once per month. Maybe less. Lots of water, lots of unsweetened tea.

    I've totally stopped buying diet soda for home consumption. Instead, I drink regular water or Perrier. I'll still have a diet soda on occasion when we go out, but usually I choose iced tea. Given that there have been points in my life where I downed a 12 pack a day, I feel pretty accomplished.

    Oh, and it's the caramel color that's going to kill us all.

    When I do go fizzy, I normally go about 1 part 100% juice (berry usually) and 2 parts club soda.

    Either that or a Perrier.

    Perrier is really the best. My mentor made fun of me a lot this spring for drinking so-called "snooty water," but it's the cheapest non-flavored option at Costco and comes in the most easily recycled container. Pellegrino comes in glass, which doesn't go in the comingled recycle here. :(

    I choose San Pellegrino when it's available in restaurants, but Perrier is everywhere in grocery stores at a reasonable price.

    Actually brushing your teeth while they are still weak will wear away even more of the enamel. You should wait a while before brushing, after acids or sugars. Saliva, by the way, has a base content and will work to neutralize, to some extent, the acidity in foods.

    Usually what I do now is what my dental hygienist recommends: chew gum.

    I've read that you should wait thirty minutes before brushing your teeth after you drink a soda.

    I drink green tea or tap water (and far too much coffee).

    My splurge is ice cold coke in a small glass bottle, but I only get that in France or Thailand. Otherwise, I don't drink pop anymore.

    The additives in diet drinks give me a migraine. I've never read anything positive about the health affects from any diet drink.
    Just saying....

    All good options.

    But as far as complete health, Baraka_guru you've got it right.
    Pear juice and Vanillin, or just fresh vanilla, sounds good in the club soda.

    ... I can't find the ingredient list for SanPellegrino and/or am too lazy to search for it online or at the store.

    Is it acidic?
