Standard military shotgun then was, and as far as I know still is, the Remington 870.
The only experience I have with Savage shotguns was a 20g/.22 single shot over and under. Excellent little squirrel gun. Miss 'em on the standstill with the .22, flip the switch on the hammer, and lay waste to 'em with the 20g while they're on the run. Many a squirrel fell to that little gun.

Savage currently makes a "slug rifle" It is a bold action shotgun with a rifled barrel for deer hunting. I know it isn't really pertinent to your questions but I love mine so much I just have to brag on it.

If it has a perforated heat-sheild and bayonet lug, then it's a Savage Trench Gun. These were GI up into the fifties, and "unofficial" GI for many years after; they were very popular in Vietnam.
The most common Trench Guns were the M97 Winchesters, and those sell for $1000 at least these days; a Savage could bring quite a bit more. |

Hey, I have a Savage 410/22lr over under. Great gun. As for the post, markings on the gun should tell you the make and model, or at least an SN. Chacnes are though, it is an Remington 870. A good gun. Post a pic and I can tell you what it is. |

Try searching on the Savage 620 pump-action shotgun. I believe they were used from WWII up through Viet Nam in the same capacity as the Rem 870. soundmotor |
