Spear Throwing
I hope this isn't a stupid question, but is spear throwing considered a sport anywhere? I know about javelin throwing, but I mean this more along the lines of archery, where you would throw to hit a target for accuracy.

i would imagine soo, i'm sure people hunt with spears too.
i was reading an article the other week in which i man used a civil war cannon to hunt deer... really illegal, lol |
First off, spears were rearly thrown being that they were used as stabbing weapons. As far as I know, the only hunting that is with a spear is boar hunting. The spears are not thrown, but held stationary and the boar runs itself through.
Other than that, there is the track sport javelin, but that is just for distance, and not accuracy. You might want to give your local SCA a call and see if they have anything like that. |
Here in the midwest, our SCA kingdom is calontir, and they have a throwing competition, spears being a part of it, about every year at the war of lillies- this year about everything got rained out, though, so I dont know how set in stone that is- some of the mountain man events and the like have the occaisional throw anything contests, and spears show up at those..... cold steel makes some servicable spears for throwing and a good boar spear.......I have heard of competitions at ren faires, but never seen one at any of the ones that I sell at....

I found The World Atlatl Association.
atlatls is"A throwing device usually consisting of a stick fitted with a thong or socket to steady the butt of a spear or dart and extend the length it travels." |
