Holy moly!

My wrist hurts from just thinking about shooting that gun.

At least with the SW500 you have that big ole' muzzle weight to keep down some of the kick.

Here, you have essentially a snub nose.

I'm gonna have to pass on this one and carry a rifle if I head into big bear country.

Why? I just don't get it. That thing is a stupid as the 2" S&W 500 I saw in the store the other day. Does anyone out there actually think that it would be a good selfdefense weapon?

Don't get me wrong. For hunting big game with pistols, the 454 and 500 are great rounds, but no one with a brain is going to hunt with anything shorter than a 6" barrel.

The hunting that a person would use these for is mainly other people, wouldn't you think? As for self-defense, no this isn't a primary weapon. More than likely, it's what someone envisages as the ideal backup weapon.

I hope anybody who owns that can aim. Most likely you'd need to steady one hand with the other to help yourself deal with the recoil. Of course, that'd break both of your wrists, but it's better than the alternative of firing with one hand only and having it fly off, gun still in hand, behind you.

Would rather have a broken wrist from firing that then being mauled by a grizzly or mountain lion that i didn't see on my way to a hunting spot. Try getting a rifle off your back, loading and firing it as a grizzly charges! Barely did it in time when I was charged by a buck whitetail.

I have fired this round a couple of times. Basically good for about 6-8 rounds then the flinch factor trashes the accuracy.

Is $819.00 considered reasonable or expensive for a pistol of that type?

I have a Taurus Raging Bull (5 rounds, .454 Casull), and yes, it does have quite a bit of kick. You'll eventually get used to it, but its still loud as all hell. That barrel on that gun is way too short, the barrel on my RB is 6 1/2". It retails for about $850 or so.

In Oz, we would never even get to look at one in person, let alone actually own one.

I would like to have a shoot with that....

Feh. I've shot a seventy+ pound 20mm (vulcan, what the CIWS shoots) rifle before (so big it had to be registered as a Destructive Device). I'm a BIG guy, I fired it prone on concrete, and the recoil from EACH round slid me back between 6 inchs and a foot. Any gun you can fire standing up without a tripod is a SMALL arm.
