credit card sized personal defense shotgun
Wow, I was surfing through some links over on www.fark.com and I found a prety out there bad idea for a personal defense weapon: a credit card sized bb shotgun:
http://www.wftv.com/news/3786870/detail.html I wouldn't want to carry one of those in my pockets, sit down the wrong way and say goodbye to the boys. Might be an interesting thing for a collector though. Anyone else have any wierd/out-there personal defense weapons stories? |

Don't buy into the hype.
The fact that it shoots 7 pellets is the only thing it has in common with a shotgun. Since it fires .177cal BBs that are 'effective at five to 10 feet" and "absolutely useless at 20 feet" you're basically looking at the muzzle energy of a BB gun. All hype. |

I was using the description given by the article, which not suprisingly is flawed. I got a kick out of it if for no other reason than it is a muzzleloader that you block the barrel of with crumpled paper to keep the load from running out.

Don't rely on pepper spray for anything! I have watched at least two people smile and lick it off their lips and keep doing what they were doing. Unless you are spraying straight pepper extract, something like CalderaCaldera, 16,000,000 Scoville Units, I wouldn't count on doing anything more than pissing off the target. If it won't effectively kill the target, then don't shoot it. IMHO, I think further pissing off someone intending you do you harm is not the best approach to dealing with the situation. Running is good. ;-)

I have seen pepper spray work quite well, but brand and composition matter a lot- It must be from a reputable company, and alcohol based (water based just is not good)
also, do not spray someone and then stand there- they will be blind, but possessed of considderable adreneline strength and the anger to use it...........to give a good idea of the the difference between brands, most of my info comes from a friend who guards a maximum security prison- when the prisoner does not want to leave the cell, they threaten him with their pepper spray- 9 times in ten, he goes, the other one is a new inmate that has'nt had it used on em yet- yes this stuff is comercialy available, to anyone....

Not really credit card sized, I just pulled out my VISA and mine isn't about an inch thick, not sure about anyone else. I have a 5 shot 9x18 thats about the same size as that, and reloadable, and has a hell of a lot more stopping power than a .177 BB.

Pepper spray is not commercialy available except to those living in Massachusetts who do not have the right to self defense. At least not at at their own discretion.

I own one of those NAA Revolvers in .22 WMR. It is truly an experience to fire the gun. It makes the most godawful noise and kicks up almost vertical in you hand when you fire. The only way I can keep it from seeing sky after a shot is to wrap my trigger finger around the frontstrap and fire it with my middle finger. Obviously this results in hot gas and still-burning powder catching me on the inside of the first joint of my index finger. Yay, fun.
It's enough of a Noisy Cricket that I guarantee one shot is all it would take. Any would-be assailant would get disabled from the sheer volume of sound and fury coming form the pocket-sized beasty. |

I saw the maker of this new toy on CNBC or one of those type of news networks and he had a Kerry'esc supporter on there making fun of the poor guy. I don't personaly think it is a great idea. It just looked to flimsy and like it may go off too easily. If you are that worried about it go with the pepper spary idea or take some self defense courses. I recommend the self defense course, because you never know when you will need them and that pepper spray may not be around or you could miss. Besides the courses offer a nice workout and build self confidence.
Good luck
