Kimber 1911s

Are they milled or cast?
Do they use the Series 70 firing system?

I believe Kimbers are forged. I am also realitivly sure they do not use the series 80 firing pin safety ( I think only Colt is doing that one) An excellent source of information on 1911's is http://forums.1911forum.com/ they have different boards set up for different manufacturers. Kimbers are very nice 1911's. If you are thinking of one do some reading on the above board, they may give you some helpful info.

If I ever get around to getting a 1911, it will be either a Kimber or a Paraordanence.

If you have the bucks.... get a true 1911 like a Les Baer, Wilson, or ,gulp, an SVI. If you are among the mere mortals like the rest of us, Kimber is the top of the heap.

What do you mean by a true 1911. If you mean close to the original you have it wrong. The originals were made by Colt to military specs. They were not anywhere near a tight as todays guns. They were also purposely built this way to function even when abused and dirty. Les Baer and the others are very nice guns but they are no more a "true" 1911 that a Kimber or any other currently produced 1911. If you are looking for a self defense gun the lower priced 1911s will do what it takes at 1/4 the price. The accuracy of the Les Baer and others is nice if you need it, but most self defense situations take place at 7 yards or less, and a accuracy of 3-6 inches is more than sufficient.

I'm actually leaning now towards are Colt Gunsite, or Series 70 or Government Model.

It's all fantasy though. None of this shit is legal in MA. The only legal 1911 is S&W.

Kimber's now use the series 80 firing pin safety system (named by Kimber as series II, except in the anniversary Custom and anniversary Gold Match which emulate the Series 70(known by Kimber as series I). All Kimbers used to be series 1, but now all current models, with the exception of the aforementioned Anniversary Models, are series II with the firing pin safety.

Forgot to mention, when looking at a Kimber, If it has a II engraved in the slide as part of the name it is a series 80,or series II. The guys at the shop I go to are confused by the Kimber line up. I have one of the limited edition 9mm stainless target II. I do love it, but when I go to a 45 I'm thinking about bumping up to a custom Wilson or Baer, but am also considering the Anniversary Gold Match(would have already bought if the Front Strap came checkered!!!!!).

I would suggest reading up on 1911's at forums such as High Road (www.thehighroad.org) and 1911Forum (www.1911forum.com). At the moment Springfield Armory is univerally enjoyed for their 1911 models, particularly the MilSpec and WWII Models. Their reliability is top notch, they perform very well, and they're extremely cheap (a SS Milspec tops off the price list at $520 or so).

In short:
http://www.fsguns.com/regulations.html

This page contains the approved roster:
http://www.state.ma.us/chsb/frb/frb.html

But you can't actually fucking buy anything even if it's on the roster because
http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/seslaw98/sl980180.htm

It has to be approved by our ass of an attourney general. Every manufacturer must submit two samples of every gun for testing to get it approved by the AG. The samples are destroyed.

Summary of the Attorney General 940 CMR 16.00 et seq. regulations

_ The regulation is a manufacturing specification that requires at least the following:_

Performance Test__________ Limits of Accuracy Test ____________ Metalurgical Test_

Drop Test ________________________ 10 lb Trigger Pull _____________________ Hidden Serial Number_

Loaded Round Indicator or Magazine Disconnect ____________ Detailed Safety Briefing and Disclosures_

Approved Lock (from Dealer)_

No kidding. First it's taxachusetts...now it appears to be confiscachusetts.

New Jersey doing something similar soon with 'electronic' user recognition crap, I believe.

Off to read Lebell's posting about assault weapons confiscation turning violent in MA.

BTW, for off the rack forged and smooth 45's Kimber makes one of the best, imho. I've always loved the looseness of government models, but Kimber has done something very nice with the style.
