What do you have for home protection...

I was thinking not everyone here can have guns, but do you have something you keep by your bed just in case someone tries to break in the house and you need to defend yourself/your stuff?

I have a 7 iron by my bed, which I would probably use if I had to to whack someone round the knee's with if they broke in my house.

I usually don't keep my larger weapons closer to my bed (I am a collector of sort). In my living room is a pair of escrima sticks, and a pair of nunchucks, and next to my bed is another set of escrima sticks, a really sharp non-folding knife (not sure what real name of it is actually), and a sword. I would probably go for the sticks if I had the time to make a choice and not grab the closest weapon though. My wife also keeps her sticks/switchblade in the bedroom, I feel sorry for the guy that walks in there~

One of those, I use it for exercise and defense (you'd have to be stupid to break into my house, as you'd get stabbed if armed, and there's nothing of value anyway.)

By the bed,

Lethal: a Kel-Tec 9mm, loaded with Federal Hydra-Shoks. (Mom has the SIG P229 with Speer Gold dots, just because the trigger is easier and the kick isn't as bad as the Kel-Tec.)

Non-Lethal: a 6 D-Cell Mag-lite.

A Beretta 96 compact L with 185 grain Hydrashocks. I have serious doubts anyone would break into my current house. Still, if someone wants to break in and is stupid enough to come upstairs they will find out very quickly the extent to which I will go to protect my family.

there's a weapon in every room of my house. Not all of 'em are classified as weapons - i.e. the plunger in the bathroom is not a weapon, but I'll gladly kill an intruder with it anyway.

Machete in the garage, 6Dcell maglite in the sewing room, kali sticks in the study, (obviously) lots of knives in the kitchen, katana in the living room (on a display stand, looks like a display sword but it's fully functional), Ka-Bar in the bedroom, etc etc etc

I sell weapons, so its just not fair- there is currently no where in my house where I am further than 10 feet from at least one bladed weapon of the sword or battle axe variety- in the bedroom we also have the .38 snubnose by the bed and the Ak-47 in the closet, loaded and ready.

I live in a house full of crazy Yugoslavs so anyone breaking into our house has got to be pretty stupid. I have a katana and a fighting staff in my room. My brother keeps a machette next to his bed and my dad keeps an old clublock by his. Anyone who breaks into our house is going to get wacked pretty bloody hard.

I tried that for about a week after I got my mossy, then I went and tried to shoot those slugs and I realized why almost everybody who knows their way around shotguns uses lighter loads for home defense...

A magnum slug is wasted on a person, it will go all the way through with plenty of energy left over. A regular 2 and 3/4 or a reduced recoil ('tactical') 2 and 3/4 slug will also, but the over pentration won't be as bad, and since the recoil is so much lighter, it is a lot easier to shoot quickly.

I live in the country, so I keep a couple magnum slugs nearby just in case I have to deal with a bear or, probably more likely, a really mean loose cow. For home defense though, I keep my shotgun loaded with 2 and 3/4" O Buck, with some regular 2 and 3/4" slugs on the cartridge sock.

OH, and for home defense I keep a Mossberg 500 with the 18.5" 'security' barrel, loaded with O Buck, no sidesaddle or mag extensions (to bulky and ungainly for swinging around a small house), and a shellholder on the stock with some more buck and a couple slugs.

Of course, I usually also have my carry pistol nearby, and a ball bat for basic trouble, and my rifles...

These guys will do fine.

While they're eating the bad guys, the wife and I will saunter over to the gun room, and find something to administer the coup de grace with

On the other hand, Riggs is ready for that too.

But this is the one you really have to watch for.

On a more seriousl note, we figure that no one is likely to break in because of the dogs, but if they do, see the above.

I'm in the process of deciding on a security system, looking into bars for the windows, and have 34" of Easton aluminum that I'm pretty confident with against anything other then a firearm.

None of my guns are stored where I now live, but none of them would be practical for defense anyway. My .38 colt auto is in a locked case in a locked closet at my parent's farm.

In all practicality, home invasions are very rare. Most intruders come when people aren't home, as they are after your stuff, and not you anyway.

Now, if the rare sicko ever stumbled into my father's house, mercy be to the poor soul. I grew up shooting handguns, rifles, shotguns, full-auto machine guns (50 cal, 30 cal, BAR, etc). Although, he rarely, if ever kept anything loaded in the house. It's just not a good practice if you have kids. I would be willing to bet that you have a much higher probability of you or someone you love being hurt or killed by your own firearm than you are to ever be attacked by a home intruder. Of course, it might depend on where you live too .

However, the most practical home intruder deterent is none other than a good dog, as mtsgsd suggested. Criminals look for easy victims with easy opportunities. A dog makes noise, and if it's a big dog, it is a formidable opponent for any size man/woman.

As for my home though, I have neither firearms or dogs. But, like many people pointed out... many things can be weapons. I'm a very non-violent person... till I get mad. I'll pull a Grosse Pointe Blank if I have to and use the TV by my bed =) . haha

4 D-cell Maglight beside the bed. A good light is far more useful than a weapon, and the brilliant beam can be used to blind and disorient.

I figure that I'm not all that sharp when just waking up from a dead sleep, and a firearm combined with poor judgement from insufficient level of consciousness is a bad combo.

Past that, I've a Mossberg 590 loaded with #4 shot in the closet near the bed.

Man, I just love all the responses of people with bigass maglites

Fortunately, I live in a neighborhood in which I dont see the need to arm myself. There are several guns in the house, but none of them loaded, and there isnt even anything other than birdshot to load them with.

At school, you cant keep weapons, and I see no need to anyways.
