Hunting help

Hey y'all. Im going home for Thanksgiving break this week, and over the break I'm going upland gamebird hunting. I've only ever done this once, and I'm going back to the same place. I'll be hunting pheasant, chucker, and quail, and was hoping to get some feedback on which shotgun(12 or 16 guage, double barrel or pump or whatever,) and what shot to use. Thanks.

Before I got too lazy to go hunting, I used 2-3/4in shells with 1oz of 7-1/2 size shot with my 12gauge semi-auto shotgun.
Hope that helps,
Robert

The gun choice is yours. Use whatever is the most comfortable.

For shot, I prefer a 2 3/4 in. 4 shot. For quail I would use a 2 3/4 in. 8 or 7 1/2 shot.

Thanks for the responses you guys. I was leaning towards 71/2 shot to.

By pheasant I am assuming ringnecks. 7 1/2 will not bring one down unless you are right on top of it. I woud use a 4 shot minimum. My preference are for 3" steel (damn SD GF&P) 3 shot or deuces.

Edit: I completely missed the Ga. I am assuming you use a 12ga, however the same advice still holds for 20ga.

a no6 shell in a 12g is more than heavy enough for phesants, gun choice is what feel right for you, I use a 12g o/u with 3/4 and full chokes

I agree with you homer, as long as we are talking about lead shot. If you use steel, anything smaller than 4 only cripples birds. (Damn treehuggers for forcing me to use steel) Better to go with a little more than you think. I still hold that 7 1/2 is way too weak for longer shots.

Usually it's lead that's illegal. If you can't use lead, there are other options. You might want to check out tungston shot. It's a little denser than steel and holds its original energy a bit better.

When you goto the store to buy your items, be sure to ask about what type of metal is used in the shells. It's true that most of the time lead is prohibited, but if its steel here, you may as well get (as said before) tungston or magnesium.
