WOO-HOO My First Firearm.

:D :D :D :D :D

So tomorrow after class, I am going to pick up my first firearm ever... And its going to be a Remington 870 Express Magnum 12 Gauge. It only costs $223.99, and I'm splitting the cost with a friend. I am so excited.   I can't wait to go shooting this weekend. :D Yay for gun ownership.

PULL!

jumpjet 11-12-2003 09:21 PM

I'm the proud owner of the other half of that firearm. w00t!

Lebell 11-12-2003 09:21 PM

Be responsible and have fun :)

jumpjet 11-12-2003 09:29 PM

Thanks lebell! We will...on both counts.

Slims 11-12-2003 09:43 PM

heh, enjoy. Make sure you get 2 and 3/4 inch shells and not 3" magnum, they will be better for you to learn on.

enjoy your new toy.

SuperMidget 11-12-2003 11:19 PM

Ahhh, our little strife is all grown up. He went and bought his first gun. :D

Congrats, the first gun is always the best. Have fun, be safe and aim small.

numist 11-13-2003 12:10 AM

be careful with it - I can hit things from 900 meters away with the right equipment, but it takes time to get there, so take it out, have some fun, and remember to practice proper safety, if one of you comes back with lead in 'im, then I'm taking the damn gun.

Enjoy fellas

Moonduck 11-13-2003 08:41 AM

Good on ya! Good choice in guns too, it'll serve you both well. Be safe, and have fun!

You'll have to pry it from my cold dead fingers. ;P

Thanks for all the support guys!

Little advice with your first firearm:

Take hunter's safety whether or not you actually plan to hunt. What you learn there will be invaluable to you.

SSJwrestler 11-16-2003 10:12 AM

be safe, thanks for supporting el 2nd Amendmento

Ooh, thanks for that tidbit of advice, I never would have though of that.

But unfortuantely the deal did not go down as planned :( . So we weren't able to get the gun. Stupid things like food and school got in the way :| Dumb bills.

orange monkeyee 11-16-2003 06:48 PM

My friend has one of those, I've used it before. Lots of fun. Makes pumpkins go Splat! with slugs.

Much more fun to be able to keep your firearm after using it. So, yeah, be responsible and have fun.

That's too bad that things didn't work out. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I was looking to get another 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser, but I ended up having to sell one of my .22s to take care of some unforseen expenses. Trust me though, the first gun is always the best, no matter how many more you buy, that first one will probably always hold a special place in your heart.

eribrav 11-18-2003 06:31 PM

If you're still looking for your first gun, you might consider some other firearms before buying a 12 gauge shotgun.

A 12 gauge is not going to be the firearm you want to grab to go out and shoot targets on a given afternoon. Even with 2 3/4 shells it's a hell of a wallop on your shoulder. When I go out to sight in and check the accuracy of my 12 gauge for hunting season, I fire maybe 5 or 6 rounds. At that point my neck and shoulder hurt and I'm sick of the damned thing. Since you hadn't planned on hunter safety, I'm assuming you don't specifically need the shotgun to hunt with. Although I will say with light rounds, skeet shooting can be enjoyable.

You might consder a small calibre semi-automatic rifle instead. A .22 is great for hunting squirrels, and also really nice for plinking.

Just a thought.

Moonduck 11-18-2003 08:17 PM

I've never understood people talking about heavy recoil on a 12ga. It never seemed to be that much to me. Then again, I'm used to things like Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44magnum, and I don't think it has overmuc recoil.

To date, the only weapons that have beaten me up were rifles. One was, oddly, a .223, but I attribute that beating to an absolutely atrocious stock. The blasted thing was painful just to shoulder (some oddball folding hard plastic thing). The other was a Lee-Enfield "Jungle carbine" in .303 British. It beat me up because of the so-called recoil pad on the butt. Why they call an undersized brick of steel-hard rubber (1" x 3.5" or so) a recoil pad, I don't know. All I know is that the bloody thing like to wore a hole in my shoulder. I've got a coupla .30-06's that don't have near the percieved recoil of that lil beast.

Happy day for you. Congrats to you!!!

Exodus 12-07-2003 07:00 PM

Congrats on your new purchase. Have fun and be safe!

Damnyankee 12-08-2003 07:23 AM

I have the same gun that I use for turkey and deer, and the 3" Remington copper solid slugs will ruin your shoulder after a few rounds. If you want to have fun plinking, go with a .22. I have a Ruger 10/22 and couldn't be happier with it, there's also a lot of after market cool stuff you can buy for it.

ironman 12-08-2003 12:52 PM

All i can say is be carefull and responsible.

Jonnymax 12-08-2003 01:06 PM

Awesome choice!

My first firearm was a Remington 870 magnum With 20" barrel, 6 round mag tube and synth stock. I love it.

Have fun and be safe!

strife 12-10-2003 05:50 PM

Thanks for the encouragement, although, as stated earlier, and I should have put an edit in the first post, we weren't able to get the shotgun.

Bills, and school take priority I guess. LAME!

strife 01-09-2004 12:37 PM

So for Christmas, my girlfriend and her family decided to get me a Winchester Model 1300!!!! It's a 12 guage with synthetic stock, 5 round tube +1 in the barrel. The barrel is 28" I believe. WOO-HOO!! I can't wait to take it out and try it. Yay! They also picked up a gun cleaning kit, and a case and a box of shells too. I'm all set. In the words of a (somewhat) lame video game: "It's time to kick ass and chew buggle gum...I'm all outta gum."

Lebell 01-09-2004 01:05 PM

Well congrats!

Glad to see you finally scored!

SuperMidget 01-09-2004 02:28 PM

Welcome to the ranks strife. Always good to hear of another convert.

Ditto!

Stay safe, aim small.

strife 01-09-2004 10:51 PM

I hate to sound dumb, but how does one "aim small." I don't really understand that concept.

SuperMidget 01-09-2004 11:22 PM

Don't aim at a large target. Pick a small point and use that as an aim point. It's just a way of keeping yourself on target.

The full saying is "Aim small, miss small"

Not relevant to shotguns, but I like to say it. ;)

strife 01-09-2004 11:27 PM

Yeah, I remember hearing that quote from The Patriot, with Mel gibson. It makes sense, thanks for clarifying that. :P

Mastershredder 02-01-2004 03:20 PM

I bought one in October. Awesome gun. If you're not using a scope, i'd recommend getting some Tru-Glo fiber optic sights for it.

strife 02-01-2004 03:26 PM

I've seen the Tru-Glo sights before and definatly wanted to pick some up, however, money is tight, and I haven't even been able to shoot it yet :(. So it's not real high on the must have list for right now. But they are definatly on the list.

Mastershredder 02-01-2004 08:16 PM

Well like everyone's saying, have fun and be safe. Oh and if a friend gives you a bunch of extra ammo, make sure to read what shell type it is before firing it... I was skeet shooting and accidentally put a Magnum turkey load shot in. When you don't expect it, it just hurts even more. :) I definately agree with taking the hunter safety course. It's free, and it will give you some good info.

Dostoevsky 02-02-2004 05:45 PM

Congratulations fellas, the trusty old 870 will never let you down. I own a lot of guns but when I'm in the woods carrying a shotgun its an 870 express. If pot is a gateway drug I think shotguns may be gateway guns. I know my collection has really expanded and diversified since my first 870. Happy collecting!!!
