its duck season in california and it be time to get me some malards

Explain to me how you set up. Do you hunt from the shore in a blind or from a boat? Do you have luck with decoys? What kind of shot do you use?

the one time i did it in california we snuck up on one side of the lake... and then someone drove up to the otherside and started honking and all the ducks flew up and over us...

Any serious duck hunter will learn the values of the right kind of decoy spread. I have over 5 dozen decoys and on some days I'll use all of them, or more with a friend, and on other days I'll only toss out three. It totally depends on the situation, ie weather, time of year, area, how the birds are acting, etc.

As important as a good spread is, a good call and a good caller are even more important.

The way it works were we shoot ducks is as follows: You are allowed to go out an hour before sunset until an hour after. We usually take the dog out the waterhole the ducks live in, send her in, scare up the ducks, shoot a few, then wait until they come back. Awesome experience to be sitting there, in complete silence, just listening for the sound of the ducks coming back in. Very Zen....or something.

I've done a fair bit of duck and goose hunting around here. We usually walk out into a field, sit at the edge of an old corn row neara ditch, set out the decoys and wait. My calling has improved alot over the last year, but still needs work. The spot we go to seems to be on a flyway or something because every 10 - 15 munutes we usually get a few birds, sometimes more.
I'm more of a rifle hunter so I always have to remember to follow through on my shots.
I use fasteel 3" for duck and 3 1/2" for geese in my Benelli 12 Gauge.
It sure is fun!
