Cleaning your pistol

I just got my first gun( S&W model 469) and I figured out how to break it down but now I am left wondering the best intervals and way's to clean it. I am using weapon wipes, hoppes oil, and break free oil. I usually give it a clean after everytime I shoot and make sure the slide is lubed. My question is what oils do you guys prefer and how often do you clean the barrel and or break down the gun and clean it out? Any tips are appreciated as well

I've never tried the weapon wipes, but I use hoppes and break free. Shake the break free before you use it!

Always clean after every time you shoot. As for cleanings in between range times, I clean mine depending on how often I carry it. Usually just wiping it down will do. I probably only break it down and clean it every 4-5 months unless it gets wet. When it gets wet I always break it down, wipe it down, re-oil, and put a thin coat of Rig on it.

Also...never let excessive oil build up on the bolt face... Keep it dry. If you keep your gun loaded 24/7, oil on the bolt face could seep into the primer and cause your first round to be a dud. Just something to keep in mind...

I use break free as well. So does the Army, or at least they used to. Clean after every use, note about cleaning the barrel - don't use a wire brush every time, just use a cotton wad to wipe the barrel out. If the barrel has any small pits in it, then using the wire brush will clean these out every time. The gun will be more accurate if these are filled in and the barrel is smooth. Use the wire brush if the gun has not been fired in a long time, and use it before going shooting.

Beware, Im very, very picky about my firearms and how they are cleaned and how often. So take this with a grain of salt.

It is best if you clean your weapon at a bare minimum everytime you shoot it. Generally I clean my about once a month.

Break free is good, but if you let the weapon sit for any amount of time a residue builds up, and thats never a good thing. I have used Rem Oil and it seems to work very well without leaving any kind of noticable residue.

The best barrel cleaning device I have seen is the Bore Snake. I wouldnt use it on a competition firearm because I dont like the idea of metal on metal when it comes to precision shooting.
