oddest and/or unique weapons.

I'm not really into guns so I'd like to see what TFPer's have as far as variety goes.I'm about 90% finished with my trebuchet and love telling the home security telemarketers why I don't need their services.Their scripts cover most scenarios except for the "old moat , drawbridge, and trebuchet" scenario.

debaser 07-31-2003 08:54 PM

Me and a bunch of guys made a coil-gun back in college. Took us about 3 weeks, but it would fire a pinball through a 4x4 (piece of wood, that is).

Fun stuff.

PS - Exactly how does one use a trebuchet to secure ones house?

MSD 07-31-2003 09:17 PM

I'll bet the Jehova's witnesses don't try to convert the trebuchet guy ...

Some how, I think they have a contingency plan.

Slims 07-31-2003 09:41 PM

We made a miniature rail gun in my AP physice class some years back. It never worked worth shit though.

My roomate is currently trying to build his own trebuchet and I look forward to all the mischief that will ensue.

Compressed air powered potato cannon. That was a lot of fun to scare the neighbors with but after it broke the second time I gave up on it.

TheClarkster 07-31-2003 10:07 PM

You better make sure to post picture of the finished Trebuchet. Old siege engine type things are always fun.

thats the fucking way to do it man! hairspray ones suck ass.

Moonduck 08-01-2003 03:45 PM

As a kid, we made rubber band guns, but we did it using bicycle inner tubes mounted on 2x4's. Hurt like a mother when they hit.

propaganda 08-01-2003 10:02 PM

Thanks lunatic. And sorry about the off topic post I didn't read the thread title right.

i like the psychological aspect of weapons. something that when you hold it makes the person on the other end go "oh shit please kill me now."
when i was a teen/young adult my bedside weapon was an authentic native american club. it was a two foot long heavy stick with an eagle painted on the top. the eagle had four very wicked looking beaks all around the top. serious business.

when i used to go to crazy punk shows my favorite concealed weapons were bbq spit holders. i would unscrew the two pronged part from the spit and put two of them into my upper jacket pockets. they looked like brass knuckles when you took them out except there were two 3 inch metal stakes sticking out of both fists. never had to do more than show them.

walking around the house with a double sided axe is cool too.

lemming 08-02-2003 12:51 AM

a trebuchet is a seige weapon..not very good for defense=\

Fire 08-03-2003 12:43 AM

True, unless you catapult the intruder back over the wall...

I sell knives and swords, as well as make some of my own, so obviously I own quite a few... Favorite at the moment would be the MRL Falchion, with a modified grip.. nice length and balance.

gwr_gwir 08-03-2003 06:12 AM

mm. wonder what would happen if someone took a bat'leth (sp) - the klingon "sword", for those who don't know, to a punk concert...

marcopolo 08-03-2003 08:02 AM

When I was serving my apprenticeship in the tool room I made a black powder cannon that shot 50 cal. balls .
The first attempt with a wheeled carriage did not turn out as planned so I made a civil war fixed emplacement for it to be more secure in the ground .
Ah , good times .

LordSoth 08-03-2003 07:37 PM

Favorite weapon as a kid was a stick with dog poop on the end. Highly intimidating.

sofa_x 08-03-2003 07:38 PM

A buddy and I made a black powder cannon out of a brass piston. We capped the end with a nickel, and fed firework fuses in through the fluid hole. Cut a matching groove halfway through two pieces of 4x4 post and set the thing down inside so the barrel poked out of the front of what looked like a wooden cube.

We drilled a short way into a 2x4 with a 1" spade bit, melted fishing weights in a seperate contained and poured the lead into the mold, to make big fat lead projectiles.

The thing would cut through 3/4" ply like warm buter. we had to brace it against an old dry car battry to keep it on the ground when we fired it.

Dont try this at home.

far2bored 08-07-2003 09:34 AM

My dad used to have a small black powder cannon when I was a kid. It fired 1/4" ball bearings. We'd take it down to the river and blow chunks out of the concrete bridge on the other side.
Eventually it became kind on a staple at our yearly 4th of July party. Just pack it with toilet paper and its backyard safe. Loud and impressive.. made one hell of a mess though.

Back when I was a child, beer cans were made of steel and had pull tabs.

We used to make tennis ball mortars by poking a hole in the bottom of the beer can, then taping (duct tape...wonderful stuff) a tennis ball can with both ends removed to the beer can.

Stuff in a tennis ball, put a couple drops of lighter fluid in the hole at the bottom and flip to see who had to light it.

Not much of a weapon but I filled a big balloon with acyteline and put a short fuse on it. It rose about 50 feet, then boom! Blew out windows for a half block around. I'll never do that again.

Lassus 08-07-2003 12:12 PM

throwing knives and a bb bat i know its not the most unique but tis my fav

I don't know about that. The military has a version of that called a fuel/air bomb and it's highly effective against personnel.

livewirerc 08-08-2003 07:41 AM

When I was a kid I used to live and have a paper route in a crummy part of town, so I'd carry around a pair of small claw hammers in my paper bag. I used them a few times, once so violently that I bent the head of one of the hammers back to a 45 degree angle. Plus, if I needed to I could use the little buggers to pound nails too!

Another weapon that had great effect but wouldn't hurt someone too bad that I've used was a sharpened paint scraper. I could rake someone with it and cut them so they'd bleed a bit but I couldn't do any permanent damage with it. Plus, who's gonna get arrested for carrying a paint scraper?

Yeah, I was violent in my past life.

My friend made a potato cannon that used combustion to propel the potato. There was a tube and then two screws so the potato wouldn't go further, and then a bigger part where you could take off the end. You sprayed hair spray in there, shut it, pull the trigger which was an old BBQ ignitor, and BOOM! Potato is never seen again if you fire it into the air. If you didn't put a potato in there it would still make a lot of noise and pressure. Scared the crap out of his mom when he put in the hairspray and flames came out of the barrel and pushed a curtain a whole lot.

My favorite (unique/illegal) weapon has to have been an old marlin 22. rifle that my dad gave me when I was about 12. I was in Jr. high, as I recall... First thing I did when I got it was slap a 2x scope on it and dialed it in (w/my dad's help on the range) Then, I got an idea...

(I read waaaay to many International Combat Arms mags & Mack Bolan novels) I went into our garage and managed to fabricate a silencer with the help of my copy of the improvised munitions handbook published by the U.S. Army. It was amazingly simple, it took about an hour to drill all of the holes into the interieror tube and it was short work after that. Shaved off the front iron sight and seated it onto the barrell.
The toughest part was testing it. Looking back I don't know what the hell I was thinking... A kid on a bike with a rifle, scope and silencer.... Talk about asking for trouble, Jesus !!!
Anyway, I snuck out one night and rode my bike over to Puddingstone Lake for what I considered a remote location to test it out. The first test went off without a hitch, one shot only to see what the report of the rifle would be like w/the silencer on. With the exception of the crack of the bullet, my C02 bb gun made more noise.
About a week later I asked my dad to goto the gun store. While we were there I pilfered three boxes of subsonic 22. ammo. After that It was all over, the gun was almost totally silent. In a matter of two nights I managed to snuff 6 cats in the neighborhood. I put the gun away after that figuring if I kept playing sniper I'd be in a-lot of trouble.

Years later I found the silencer under my bed and decided to show my dad, needless to say he was shocked and suprised when I showed him how quiet it was... ahhh, to be young again !!!

Hmm.... I've got an air powered potato gun... I brought it to school with me last year. One of our dorms is a 12 story tower, and I have some friends who lived on the 8th floor, with a balcony. We launched all sorts of stuff out of this sucker, including filling the barrel (about 3 feet long, 1.4" pvc pipe) with ketchup and launching it up into a ketchupy cloud. I think we hit some cars with that one...

Anyone know how to make that coil-gun debaser was talking about? That sounds interesting... ;)

Just Acetylene? How big was the baloon? As someone who has made a lot of acetylene bombs, I don't believe that you broke windows from 50 feet in the air unless it was a hot air balloon. If you put pure acetylene it won't even explode, but it does make a nice big fireball.

Homemade conpressed air gun, can drive a 16 penny nail into a 2x4 from 20 feet.

A coil gun uses electromagnets to accelerate a projectile.

We used large capacitors and the drive ring of various motors for the "coil".

A track was placed through the coils and a Large ball-bearing was rolled along the track through them. Timing was acomplished (a very long process) using optical sensors which would fire each coil in sequence when the projectile was in the right place.

Each coil (we had five) was about half the diameter of the previous one, and used about twice as much power.

The whole thing was placed in the bed of a pick-up truck, charged using the 240v current at our theater, and then driven to a nearby field to test fire.

I'll give you some more details if you want them.
