The XD VS XDM

From my research there are only four changes that were made from the XD to the XDM. Number one being the slide release. Number two the angle of the grip. Number three the grip pattern it's self. Number four being the magazine capacity. The main reason that I'm even looking at the polymer frame pistol is because it's able to chamber the .45acp, +P, +P+. The .45 acp only comes in the XD modle not the XDM modle. The company is tight lip about the release of the XDM .45 acp as I have had no responce from my e-mails to SpringField Armory about it. I know that if I buy the gun I will have to do a few modifications out of the box. I think that anyone looking to buy the XD or XDM or those that already own them should know about these things. Frist you should have a trigger job done replacing the factory parts with springer precision trigger parts. Second modify the grip. Just doing those two things should give you a better and tighter groping. As for the sights your on your own because there are to many to list. On a personal note I like what they did with the slide release as it makes disassembly and reassembly that much quicker so that you can get back on target. My x girlfriend has the XD .40cal S&W Semper Fidelis , my friend has the new XDm .40cal S&W and they both like their guns. I myself am old school and have a Kimber TLE/RL II Tactical
.45 acp. However I am looking at purchasing an XD or an XDm .45acp if they ever release it. My question is does anyone know if they are going to release the XDm .45 acp soon or at all?

XDm is supposed to use match grade parts so I'd think you would need to do less work on it. I have an M&P and prefer it to my friends XD, both in .40.

The trigger bar is poorly made; It's a very thin piece of metal with the nipple spotwelded on. Where as the aftermarket trigger bar from Springer Precision is milled from one solid block of steel which gives it much more integrity than the original and is a bit more beefy. If I am going to own the gun I am going to make sure that it's integrity is not compromised at all.

Just wait a few months.

IIRC, this was the same issue back in the day when the USP first came out... everybody was waiting on the .45 version.

on a related note,
I have pretty well decided to avoid any gun that is brand new these days, just cause they dont seem to work the bugs out for a while.... doesn't seem to matter who the mfg is either

Definitely. Never get the first year of a new vehicle line. Same with firearms.

Or, ya know, buy Ruger automatics regardless of year.

I carry a dead-stock XD-40 subcompact, and have sold 15-20 of the XDMs. I like both. However, the XDM does have several upgrades over the original XD.

Match-grade barrel, match-grade limited-reset trigger, new oversized slide-stop, slightly larger mag release, different grip texture, new "trapezoid" slide profile and of course the larger mags.

Downside is that the mags don't interchange, so you're stuck trying to find new, proprietary mags for a weapon that's been around for only a short while. Bad news if you want more than the weapon comes with.

All in all, the XDM is a great gun, and so is its' parent. We've had nothing but perfect performance out of our XDs, and every customer who's bought one has loved the XDM.

As for a .45ACP version of the XDM, don't hold your breath. The XDM was a horrible case of "Phantom Gun Syndrome," and the XDM-9 was even worse. If a .45ACP version -is- built, expect it to begin showing up in adverts and gun-rag writeups 12-24 months before market release. If it isn't even being advertised yet, it probably doesn't exist, even as a prototype. However, a 45ACP XDM is unlikely IMO, because the biggest selling point of the XDM (capacity) is largely negated by the size of the .45ACP round. Hi-cap .45s have been around since the mid-80s, with capacity limited to 12-14rds; any more than this and the grip of the weapon becomes wildly oversized just due to the diameter of the rounds. An hypothetical XDM-45 miiight be able to squeeze 15rds in, but I doubt it.

The_Dunedan, I fully agree with you and the others have a very good point as well. The XD .45acp or the XDm .40cal S&W; I'm not sure which I will buy as of yet. I'm going to a few gun stores tomorrow to look them over. For aftermarket parts I would say check out PistolGear.com.

I'm begining to wonder if the XD .45 acp Tactical will chamber the +P and +P+ loads. The case and info that comes with it does not say that it can. Anyone here Know anything about that?

It has a fully supported chamber so it should be perfectly safe to shoot those rounds.

However, you will cause the parts to wear a lot faster than normal.

i switched from the 4 inch xd9 to xdm9 and never looked back.
i find the grip more comfortable, (although i havent tried the small and large grip sizes on it, not having the right punch)
i believe i more accurate with it, seems like it has a more natural sight to it and is a little slimmer for carrying.
it is a little longer on the grip though, and for a skinny guy makes it a little easier to be seen in my shirts

Skinnymofo, what type of holster do you use for cc? To stop it from printing you may want to change holsters.

What is you dominant hand, your right or left? Where on your body is the most comfortable for you to carry with easy access? As for where you live I have no recommendations for gun shops in that area, However I use to live in Longview and there was a good little shop near there you could go to. ( The Gun Shop, 360-636-1230 ) It may be a bit of a drive though. I would not buy a holster with out tring it on frist. Myself, I like Galco holsters, you will not break the bank and they are up to the task.

I have been looking at that xdm 40 for a while now. If my Job future looks better in the next few months, I'm buying one.

the kramer is amazingly comfortable. and i figure it probably will not be a problem as winter comes and i stop wearing smaller clothes.
i use right hand right hip.
as for not trying it.. i had heard enough great reviews, they are local and i didnt want a thumb break.
i had messed around with one for a .38 j frame smith but the xdm is just so new still there isnt anything but generic stuff out right now really
